- Shelter of a tree peony for the winter
The tree peony is a long-lived plant: it lives on average for a century or a century and a half, but in Asia there are specimens that are half a thousand years old. For the Chinese, the peony flower is a symbol of the awakening of life. Unfortunately, flowering does not last very long, but if you plant several plants with different flowering periods on the site, this period can be significantly increased. The tree peony is cold-resistant, but even if it happens to freeze in winter, the plant quickly recovers in the spring. From our article you can find out:
- what is the difference between a tree peony and a herbaceous one?
- how and when is the best time to plant a peony;
- how to care for the plant and how to prepare it for wintering.
Planting and caring for tree peonies
- Planting: from mid-August to late September.
- Flowering: April-May.
- Lighting: bright sunlight, light partial shade.
- Soil: fertile loam.
- Watering: twice a month, 6-7 liters of water for each bush, in extreme heat - more frequent watering; from August, watering is gradually stopped.
- Fertilizing: at the beginning of the growing season - with nitrogen fertilizer, during the budding period - with potassium-phosphorus fertilizer, during the flowering period - with a full complex.
- Pruning: annually in spring.
- Reproduction: by dividing the bush, cuttings, layering, grafting.
- Pests: aphids, caterpillars.
- Diseases: gray rot, brown spot, root rot.

Tree peony flower , or subshrub, is a species of hybrid plants of the genus Peony of the Peony family. Some scientists argue that this is not even a species, but simply a group of varieties and forms of hybrid origin, of which there are more than five hundred in the world today, and most of them grow in China. The tree peony flower is the product of Chinese breeders, although Japanese flower growers enthusiastically began cultivating this plant as soon as it appeared on the territory of their islands during the Tang Dynasty. Tree peonies were brought to Europe at the end of the 18th century and received absolute recognition from both professional flower growers and flower lovers.
How to plant peonies correctly?
Tree peony blossom
To plant a tree peony, you need to select a seedling. It should have from 2 to 3 woody shoots, its height is approximately 20 - 25 centimeters. The root system should not have any defects. Many inexperienced gardeners buy seedlings in the spring, but planting is recommended from mid-August to early October. To plant you need to do:
- The pit is 70 centimeters wide, long and deep.
- Fill the hole with drainage made of sand and gravel (so that water does not stagnate at the roots).
- Take ½ of the excavated soil and add 200 grams of superphosphate and the same amount of potassium sulfate.
- Pour the mixture into the hole, filling it halfway.
- Take the soil that is left, add compost to it and fill the hole. At the same time, leaving a little space for planting a seedling.
- Place the seedling in the hole, sprinkle it with a little soil so that the neck of the plant is level with the soil.
- Moisten the soil around the seedling, and then cover the top of the soil with humus.
Using the above recommendations, you can properly plant a tree peony without any problems.

I have a large garden and vegetable garden, several greenhouses. I love modern methods of cultivating plants and mulching the soil, and I share my experience.
Ask a Question
It is better not to place this flower next to other large plants. The best option is if the sun illuminates the peony only in the morning and evening hours. If the area is constantly illuminated, then in summer it is better to shade the flower from the midday sun. This measure will help preserve the decorative appearance of the buds for a longer period. You need to choose a place that will not be flooded in the spring. Dampness won't do any good either. You can even plant the plant on a small mound to ensure that it is protected from stagnant moisture. Alkaline or neutral soil is preferable. If the soil in the area is acidic, then it is worth adding chalk, ash or dolomite flour before planting the peony. It is necessary to inspect the rhizome of the seedling before planting. If they are dry, then you should soak it in water for 30 minutes before burying it in the ground. We would like to draw your attention to the fact that if the purchased seedling was sold in a container, then it can be planted at any time, including in the spring. But plants with an open root system are planted in late summer or early autumn. This is due to the fact that there are no small suction roots on the bare rhizome. They develop at low temperatures. Therefore, if you plant a peony purchased with bare roots in the spring, the plant will not be able to provide itself with sufficient nutrients, which will affect its condition.
Botanical description
The plant is a deciduous shrub, reaching a height of one and a half or two meters. Stems are light brown, thick, erect. They do not die off every autumn, like the stems of the herbaceous peony, but grow every year, gradually turning the plant into a hemispherical bush. The leaves of the tree peony are openwork, double-pinnate, ornamental. The flowers are very large - from 12 cm in diameter to 20 cm, or even more - located at the ends of the shoots. They come in single, semi-double, double, and various colors - yellow, white, pink, purple, crimson, even two-color.
The older the bush gets, the more flowers bloom on it. The tree peony begins to bloom half a month earlier than the herbaceous peony and blooms for two to three weeks. Tree peonies are cold-resistant.

Care ↑
Tree peony will bloom beautifully in fertile soils.
This species is very fond of mineral fertilizers, which can be used, for example, wood ash. Complex fertilizer will also work! But in order not to burn the tender roots of the plant, first thoroughly water the soil at the base and only after that add the nutrient composition.
In April, anti-aging pruning is required. Start by taking a close look at the branches. Find the top glossy buds and cut off the ends 1-2 cm above this point.
It happens that in the spring only dry, lifeless branches remain in place of the bush. Don't rush to dig them up! As soon as the sun warms the soil, new shoots will appear in place of last year's bush!
There is another interesting feature! Sometimes a new plant just doesn't want to grow. I beg you, give him time to get used to it! You should not replant it or diligently fill it with fertilizers. Usually, by the next spring, such a silent bush will grow into a lush green shrub!
Finally, we note that the tree peony loves partial shade. This doesn't mean it won't grow well in full sun. It’s just that varieties with purple, burgundy and red flowers may fade and lose their attractiveness. Try to grow a tree-like miracle on your site, because it is impossible to appreciate its beauty from photographs.
Planting tree peonies
How to plant
Tree peony is planted in the fall, from mid-August to the end of September. The process of planting any flower is preceded by choosing the place where it will grow. In the case of tree peonies, preference is given to sunny areas located at some elevation and away from buildings and large trees, so that the peony does not have to be in their shade. The soil should be loamy, so clay, humus, peat and turf soil will have to be added to the sandy soil. Clay soil must be improved with sand and organic fertilizers.
These are very important points, since the lifespan of the plant depends on them, and tree peonies can grow in one place for up to a hundred years.
Autumn planting
In the case of low groundwater, a hole for the peony is dug in the form of a cone, with a diameter at the surface of 70 cm and the same depth. At the bottom of the hole, place a layer of broken brick, gravel or sand 25-30 cm thick. If the soil is acidic, add 200-300 g of bone meal or lime, then pour the soil into a cone, place the plant on it and pour a lot of water so that the roots straighten out in it. peony After the water is absorbed into the soil, the hole is covered with earth so that the root collar is at surface level. If you are planting several specimens, place tree peony seedlings no closer than 1.5-2 m from each other.
Growing from seeds
A plant grown from seeds, under a successful combination of circumstances, will be able to bloom only 5-6 years after planting; in addition, tree peony seeds, due to the underdevelopment of the embryo, require mandatory stratification, and during long-term storage they generally lose their germination capacity. Stratification is carried out in two stages: first warm, then cold. But even performing these difficult manipulations will not guarantee that your efforts will be crowned with success.
Landing Features
Tree peonies reproduce in the following ways:
- Dividing the bush.
- Reproduction by grafting.
- Cuttings.
- Growing from seeds is suitable for breeders, since the sprouts do not retain the properties of the mother bush.
- Propagation by stem cuttings.
Professionals recommend immediately deciding on a permanent place to grow peonies, since these majestic flowers do not tolerate transplantation well. Try to choose a place so that it is illuminated by the sun in the morning and evening, and shaded during the day - the midday heat has a bad effect on the well-being of the flower. For this reason, it is best to plant on the eastern side of the site so that the bush warms up in the morning sun.
Interesting fact! Peonies are long-livers of the plant world. In China, bushes that were planted more than 800 years ago continue to bloom.
This plant does not like excess moisture in the soil: plant it on a hill, create a high-quality drainage system. Not too large stones or pieces of bricks are suitable for drainage. Make ditches around the seedlings to drain water, since its excess even for a short period, for example, during snow melting, has a detrimental effect on the condition of the plant.
Do not plant other crops too close to peonies - their roots do not tolerate neighbors.
Soil quality requirements
- Loam with good water permeability;
- Acidity index ranging from 6.1 to 6.8.

Planting time and technology
Tree peony seedlings @VL.ru
Depending on climatic conditions, it is recommended to plant from August to October.
In the southern regions of Russia it can be planted in October, while in the Moscow region or Leningrad region - in August-early September.
Step-by-step planting of tree peonies (steps in the photo below):
- In the spring, a hole is prepared for planting peonies so that the soil settles completely. The diameter and depth of the hole should not be less than half a meter.
- The thickness of the drainage layer depends on the quality of the soil. The required minimum is 20 cm.
- A seedling is placed in a hole in a plastic container. Carefully cut off the bottom, and then the walls. After this, you need to fill the remaining space with soil, making sure that the root collar remains at the level of the edge of the hole.
- When the excavation work is completed, abundant watering is carried out. One bush will require five liters of water.
- Mulch the tree trunk circle.
Photo: stages of planting a tree peony
If you add a rhizome growth stimulator to the water for irrigation, rooting will be much faster and more successful.
Why shouldn't you plant in spring?
The fact is that seedlings with an open root system have almost no thin roots through which nutrients enter the plant. At high soil temperatures, the formation of suction roots is slowed down, which leads to an imbalance in the development of above-ground and underground parts. Therefore, it is better to grow seedlings purchased in the spring by placing them in a plastic container with loose soil and sending them to a cold basement until the fall.
Sapling with open root system
If the root system is closed, seedlings can be planted at any time, but autumn planting will still lead to better results. Therefore, they should also be buried before September.
When planting, maintain a distance of 1.3-1.8 m between seedlings. In the interval, it is permissible to grow plants with a not too branched root system. The distance to trees must be at least 3 m.
Tree peony grafting
Tree peony is propagated in several ways. One of them is grafting a cutting onto the root of a herbaceous peony. This method of propagation helps to obtain a strong and unpretentious plant in the Russian climate.
Dates for vaccination:
- In the middle zone and Moscow region, tree peony is grafted in August, when the summer heat subsides.
- In the south of our country, peonies can be grafted from June to September.
- In regions with cold climates, vaccination is done at the end of July.
Execution Process
For the scion, use a healthy cutting of herbaceous peony, at least 10 mm thick and 15 cm long. The cutting is dug up 15-20 days before grafting and stored in damp sawdust in a cellar or cold storage room.
Tree peony cuttings are cut from semi-woody branches of the current year. The length of the cutting is 10-12 cm, it has at least 2 well-developed buds. The leaves on the scion are removed. The lower cut is made oblique and sharp.
Photo: Tree peony scion
The instrument for work must be sterile and well sharpened. Do not touch the cuts with your hands!
Rotary grafting
- On the root neck of the division, a cut is made with a wedge, removing part of the core.
- The lower end of the cutting is cut into a wedge (it is better to do this under water, with two sharp movements).
- The scion is inserted into the rootstock, aligning the wedge with the cutout as accurately as possible.
- Wrap the graft with a special tape or a clean strip of polyethylene or fabric.
You can clearly see stages 3 and 4 in the photo:
Vaccination in the butt
This is done if the scion and rootstock are thin and perfectly match in size. On the bark of the root collar and cuttings, cut sections of the bark and apply parts of the plant to each other (photo 1). The structure is tightly wrapped with tape (photo 2).
Caring for a grafted peony
The grafted plants are kept in a cool place in wet sawdust for about 3 weeks. Then they are planted in a greenhouse with insulation for the winter or in seedling containers and put away in the basement for the winter.
Photo 1 shows grafted seedlings. Photo 2 - the seedling is ready for planting in a permanent place
In the south, the peony can be planted in a shady spot in the garden and keep the soil moist.
The soil for planting peony requires loose soil, with a large proportion of sand. The plant is planted obliquely, deepening to the first bud.
For the winter, the peony in the open ground is covered with peat, sawdust, and fallen leaves.

Caring for tree peonies
How to care
If you don’t know how to care for tree peonies, care for them as you would for herbaceous peonies: water with the same frequency and intensity, loosen the soil after watering, remove weeds - nothing complicated. Let us remind you: pour 6-7 liters of water under each bush twice a month, water more often in extreme heat, and in August gradually reduce watering until it stops completely. After watering, loosen the soil around the bush within a radius of half a meter, but no deeper than 5 cm, remove weeds, if any, and lightly mulch the soil around the bush with humus.
Top dressing
You need to know that tree peonies are record holders for potassium and nitrogen consumption among flowering plants. At the beginning of the growing season, they require fertilizing with nitrogen, during the formation of buds and until the end of the growing season they need a large amount of potassium and phosphorus, and during the flowering period, nitrogen must again be added to potassium and phosphorus. Just remember that it is better to underfeed the plant with nitrogen than to develop a predisposition to gray mold by overdosing this element. Before applying fertilizers, water the soil generously: this will protect the peony roots from burning.

Trimming
Every spring, even before the start of the growing season, prune the peony bushes: remove the withered shoots, shorten the old ones to 10 cm. Every twenty years, Chinese flower growers prune the peony bushes almost to the surface of the soil in order to rejuvenate the plants by awakening adventitious buds at the base of the shoots. And we recommend cutting the shoots to the upper axillary point so that your peony blooms more abundantly next year.
The length of its life depends on how you trim the tree peony bush. Typically, peonies live for a hundred years, or even more: in China, protected by law and specialists, five-hundred-year-old specimens of tree peonies grow safely.
Transfer
The tree peony undergoes transplantation very painfully; sometimes strong plants, after changing their location, get sick and wither for several years and cannot recover in any way. When replanting, try to injure the root system of the plant as little as possible - dig it up with a lump of earth, which you then carefully wash off with a stream of water. Inspect the roots, remove diseased ones, shorten too long ones, treat the sections with a one percent solution of potassium permanganate and sprinkle with crushed coal.
If you want to propagate a peony, divide the bush into sections by stretching the parts to the sides at the root collar. If you had to undergo surgery, process the sections. Before planting, immerse each division, which must have several replacement buds and roots, in a clay mash for half an hour.
Winter care
It is necessary to care for the plant throughout the year. In mid-October, the bush needs to be prepared for wintering. To do this, the root circle should be covered with a thick layer of sawdust, and if it is small in size, it is advisable to put a bucket on the plant itself.
In early spring, all coverings should be removed. You can leave a small layer of sawdust as a mulch layer to better retain moisture in the soil and prevent cracking of the upper layers of the soil.
Trimming
Tree peony must be pruned every spring between March and April. This procedure is performed to improve the external qualities of the plant and prolong its life, but it has some peculiarities.
Healthy and strong shoots should be pruned to the first bud from the end of the branch, weak ones should be pruned to 10 cm from ground level. Branches damaged by frost should not be pruned in early spring. They are pruned only in May to a healthy bud. In the future, the escape will begin to develop safely.
To prevent the appearance of additional branches, the lower buds must be removed from old branches. It is advisable to remove all buds directed towards the center of the plant from young shoots.
Propagation of tree peonies
Dividing the bush
Actually, we just talked about this, all that remains is to add that it is best to divide for propagation bushes that are 5-6 years old and this should be done in August. Planting of the cuttings is carried out in the manner already described.
Cuttings
Cuttings for this method of propagation need to be semi-lignified, and they are cut in the second half of June: the bud with the leaf plate and part of the shoot wood are separated. The leaf is cut in half, the cuttings are stuck into containers with a mixture of sand and peat to a depth of 1.5 cm, covered with glass or film, regularly watered and sprayed. At the end of September they are planted in individual pots and kept in a greenhouse until spring. When peonies begin to grow, they can be planted in open ground.
Reproduction by layering
The duration of the reproduction process using this method is two years. In May, before flowering begins, select developed shoots, carefully bend them to the ground, having previously made a cut on the side facing the soil, treated it with growth substance and inserted a peg into it, and dig in the branch with a layer of soil of 8-10 cm. Moisten the soil above layering when you water the peony. In September, when the roots appear, the shoot is separated from the bush and planted in the ground in a permanent place.
- Which ground cover plants are shade tolerant?
Peony can also be propagated by air layering: an incision is made on the shoot, it is wrapped in damp moss, and then in a film, which is hermetically sealed. Roots will appear by the end of summer. The method is as simple as it is ineffective.
Grafting peonies
This is the most common and most reliable method of industrial propagation of peonies. But it can also be used in a private garden. The grafting is carried out on the roots of the herbaceous peony: in early August, cuttings with two buds of the tree peony are prepared, which must be propagated; the lower part of the cutting is sharpened to a wedge and tightly inserted into a specially made wedge-shaped groove in the root of the herbaceous peony. The place where the cutting enters the root is tightly wrapped with film.
Grafted peonies are placed in a box with damp sawdust and stored in the shade. After a month, the rooted cuttings are planted in a container so that the lower eye is immersed in the soil by 5-7 cm, and placed in a greenhouse. A grafted peony is grown for one and a half to two years.
How to grow seedlings faster
There are techniques that speed up the growing of seedlings of these flowers. First of all, this is thermal stratification. It can only be achieved by exposing the seeds to different temperatures - about 30 degrees C during the day, and about 15 degrees C at night.
Warm phase
Seeds are sown in wide containers in damp sand. The container is placed on an electric heating pad (in cold weather you can use a radiator). The sand must be heated to 30 degrees C, then it is cooled, warmed up again, moistening it from time to time, and so on for two months, until the seeds have roots.
Sprouted peony seeds
After this, the seeds are immediately removed from the sand, the tips of the roots are pinched and placed in a container with soil or in peat pots, lightly sprinkling them. Containers and pots can be placed in a box, covered with earth. This reduces the likelihood of injury to young animals when planting in the ground.
Cold phase
Then you need to move on to the cold phase. The second (cold) phase is needed for the shoot growth point to develop. At this time, the growth of the embryo is activated and the seeds germinate. It lasts about three months.
The time for completing the second stage of stratification can be reduced by treating the hypocotyl with a solution of a growth regulator. A hypocotyl is a piece of stem located under the cotyledons. First, prepare a 0.01% growth regulator solution.
The seeds must be opened, a bandage moistened with this solution and applied to the hypocotyl. To maintain the required moisture content, the seeds must be covered with translucent material. If you maintain the temperature from +5 to +10 degrees C, then a bud of growth and the appearance of leaves may form on the seedlings. If after a week the bud does not appear, then the treatment is repeated.
Pests and diseases
Tree peonies are not known for their pain, but sometimes they also have health problems. Those weakened by transplantation and old bushes are especially susceptible to diseases. The most dangerous thing is gray rot, which can be combated by spraying plants with a solution of potassium permanganate at the rate of 3 g per 10 liters of water. You can spray with a six to seven percent solution of copper sulfate. But rotting stems must be removed and burned.
Sometimes tree peonies suffer from brown spot. The affected leaves should be removed and burned so that the infection does not spread to other plants, and the bush should be sprayed with a one percent solution of Bordeaux mixture.
Care and conditions for growing plants
Caring for the shrub will not be difficult for you if you have chosen the right place for planting (without drafts, with good loose soil and moderate light). In order for your peony to always bloom and bring joy to the eye, you need to follow several rules for caring for it:
- It is necessary to water the peony twice a month, but at least 7 liters at a time in June, July, and in August no watering is required.
- With the onset of spring, it is imperative to remove the mulch, loosen the soil and apply fertilizer.
- Remove weeds as they appear before and after flowering.
- It is necessary to fertilize the plant; it is recommended to apply it during watering.
- Spring pruning should be done before the first living bud.
- It is necessary to trim off faded buds and shorten the branches by two buds after flowering.
- On the eve of winter, the peony is tied up, the roots are covered, and the bush is wrapped in burlap.
If you follow all the rules for caring for a tree peony, it will delight you for a long time with lush flowering and the exquisite aroma of its buds.
Expert opinion
Yulia Yurievna
I have a large garden and vegetable garden, several greenhouses. I love modern methods of cultivating plants and mulching the soil, and I share my experience.
Ask a Question
The most active and abundant watering is carried out in spring and before the buds begin to bloom. The plant does not tolerate cold tap water very well. It is better to use settled and slightly warm. From August, it is important to stop watering altogether, since the woody parts of the plant must prepare for winter and ripen. There is no need to worry if in the first year of life of the plants on the site, the buds are not indicative and characteristic of the variety. Typically, high-quality flowering can be expected from the second or even third year.
Tree peony after flowering
The tree peony has faded - what to do? Once the peony has finished blooming, cut back the spent shoots to the top axillary point, as they will die anyway. In the fall, before the dormant period, feed the plants: add 300 g of wood ash and 200 g of bone meal under each bush, then carefully seal the soil.
What supports are needed for peonies during flowering?
The fact is that during flowering very large buds ripen, which can damage the stem. This is due to the large weight of the flowers themselves. Therefore, even before flowering begins, supports are installed on the bushes. This helps keep the bushes looking good and prevents the bud from tilting. Ring-shaped pores are most often used. These are unique devices that consist of two rings connected by supports.
This way the entire bush is fixed. This does not allow the stems to bend in any direction, even with strong gusts of wind. Below in the video you can see what supports are used during peony flowering. Tying peonies to various sticks is not entirely effective.
Preparing for winter
Shelter of a tree peony for the winter
Despite the fact that tree peonies are cold-resistant and tolerate our winters well, professional flower growers still advise covering them for the winter: peony is not as afraid of frost as early spring thaws, during which peony buds may wake up uncovered by snow or covering material, and As a rule, frosts following a thaw can destroy a plant that has begun to grow. Therefore, in October, tie up the shoots, mulch the tree trunk circle with peat, and with the onset of cold weather, cover the plant by building a hut over it from spruce branches, leaves, a thick layer of crushed bark, or simply with jute bags, so that the wintering of the tree peony goes smoothly.
Features of growing tree peony in different regions
Tree peony is a deciduous shrub up to 2 m tall with perennial strong stems and lacy feathery leaves. It has beautiful flowering and produces double, single or semi-double buds that remain decorative for about three weeks.
Unlike the herbaceous peony, the tree peony has increased endurance and calmly reacts to droughts and cold snaps. This allows the crop to be planted in all regions of the country. But when caring, you need to take into account the unique characteristics of the climate.
Growing and caring for tree peony in Siberia
Videos and photos about planting and caring for tree peony in Siberia show that the shrub takes root well in cold climates. But when growing it, you need to follow some rules.
In particular, planting of the crop is carried out at the end of summer or beginning of September, since frosts and snowfalls may begin in mid-autumn. As part of its care, the tree peony is watered weekly, especially during dry periods. For the winter, the plant is wrapped in non-woven material, and the roots are insulated with spruce branches and dry leaves.
For planting in Siberia, it is recommended to choose the most frost-resistant varieties of crops
Growing and caring for tree peony in the Leningrad region
In the north-west of Russia, tree peony care is generally standard. But special attention is paid to the irrigation regime - you need to ensure that in the rainiest months water does not stagnate at the roots of the bush. It is better to plant the crop at a higher elevation; the optimal time is early September.
Attention! In the Leningrad region, tall peonies can be damaged by squally winds. To protect against them, it is advisable to plant the shrub under the cover of a fence or trees.
Planting and caring for tree peony in the Urals
When planting in the Urals, tree peony must be protected from exposure to extremely low temperatures. For the winter, it is carefully covered both along the crown and in the root area. The crop is usually transferred to open ground in early autumn; it is not customary to carry out the procedure in spring due to the likelihood of late return frosts.
In the summer in the Urals, when caring for tree peonies, it is recommended to carry out preventive treatment against rot and other diseases. If the season turns out to be rainy, the bush may suffer from excess moisture.
Types and varieties of tree peonies
The basis of all cultivated varieties of tree peonies are several natural species: Lemoine peony, as well as yellow peony, Delaway peony, Potanin peony, belonging to the group of semi-shrub peonies. Among the registered varieties of tree peonies, most grow in China. Peony varieties are divided into three groups:
- Chinese-European - varieties with double, large, heavy and therefore drooping flowers. Color – from pale pink to fuchsia;
- Japanese varieties - their flowers are not so large, light, hovering above the bush;
- Hybrids of yellow peony and Delaway peony are the most popular variety group with yellow flowers.
Several varieties of tree peonies popular among gardeners:
- Sisters Kiao - two-color pink inflorescences: one half is dark red, the other is white-cream, flower diameter is 16 cm;
- Sapphire - pale pink flowers with a dark crimson center with a diameter of up to 18 cm, of which there can be up to fifty on a bush at a time;
- Coral altar - two-color crowned flowers of both salmon and white shades with a diameter of up to 20 cm;
- Green Jade - light green bud-shaped flowers make an indelible impression with their originality.
Why peonies don’t bloom: what to do?
Tree peonies do not always please summer residents with a good harvest. Therefore, in the first year you should not expect a large number of ovaries to appear on the bushes. You should be prepared for the fact that during the first two years, after the bush appears and is planted, when the buds appear, you need to pinch them and cut them off. This way you will form a good strong bush, which will then delight you with a large number of peonies.
If after 3 years of growth and proper care your peonies do not bloom, try fertilizing them more often with organic fertilizers. Perhaps the place you chose for them suits the peonies. Plants do not tolerate shady areas, as well as proximity to many plants. Peonies are usually planted in bright places that receive direct sunlight.
