So that ACHIMENES does not disappoint
Achimenes are very easy to care for and at the same time bloom beautifully and are pleasing to the eye.
I have been growing them for more than five years and will express my point of view on care, in which I cannot entirely agree with some statements. They begin their flower year at the end of February, when it is time to plant the first batch after hibernation. I do this in several stages so that the flowering lasts until late autumn. The next batches will arrive in 10-15 days. And so on until the beginning of May. Achimenes are not picky about the soil, the main thing is that it is light and allows air to pass through well. I use a store-bought violet mix and add perlite. The drainage consists of a two-centimeter layer of sphagnum moss. A wide, not tall pot is best suited. I lay out the rhizomes horizontally on the surface and sprinkle them with earth, about 2 centimeters deep. Next, I moisten it with a spray bottle, cover it with a transparent bag and wait for the sprouts to appear.
After germination, care includes regular watering and fertilizing. I definitely settle the water or use rainwater. The flowers receive fertilizer every week. I like frequent feeding, but I reduce the dose by more than half.
They say that Achimenes does not feel well after the transplant. But if necessary, I transfer them, plant them in new pots - the flowering time and the appearance of sprouts are always on time. But I don’t recommend pinching during growth. Flowers branch well even without this, especially ampelous forms. Flowering is delayed by several weeks. Some varieties bush well, but the flowers become smaller.
The most suitable temperature is + 18 – 25 degrees. Achimenes grow not only in my apartment on an uninsulated balcony, but also in my country house in hanging flowerpots. Some write that cooling less than +10 degrees is detrimental to the plant. This is wrong! Sometimes in early spring or late autumn the temperature drops to +5 degrees and not a single flower died. At this time I simply reduce watering.

The flowering quality of Achimenes, which is grown from a single rhizome, depends on:
Varietal affiliation
Some varieties are predisposed to form beautiful lateral branching and produce abundant basal shoots, which also bloom. Peach Blossom, for example, does this perfectly! Some varieties do this a little worse, however, subject to the conditions of maintenance and care, absolutely all varieties are capable of blooming in bouquets from one rhizome already in the year of planting.
Conditions for keeping Achimenes
First of all, this is pretty good diffused lighting. The best windows are eastern and western, as well as south-eastern and south-western. South windows will require shading with tulle or reflective film. In the northern regions, unfortunately, flowering will not be very abundant.
Plant care
- Soil quality - you need high-quality light soil, without pathogens of fungal diseases. Based on the composition, you can focus on soil for violets
- Soil volume. A very important characteristic. Too small a volume for one rhizome will cause a lack of moisture (the plant will dry out quickly), a lack of nutrients and ultimately negatively affect the development of the plant. This will result in poor and sparse flowering. Therefore, it is very advisable to use at least 0.7-1 liters of soil; in the future it will be possible to transfer it to a larger volume if Achimenes develops very actively.
- Timely watering. It should be done as the earthen clod dries
- Timely application of fertilizers. Achimenes are actively flowering plants, so they love to “eat”. The best effect is obtained by applying fertilizers in a weak dose with each watering.
