Who can you take flowers from and who can’t?

It is better to take indoor plants as a gift from a loved one with a good aura and thoughts. Then these flowers will bring warmth and goodness to the house. They will delight the eye with their lush blooms and can even become a real talisman.

For people with whom the relationship is neutral, it is better to give something in return for the gifted flower: maybe a coin, maybe a piece of candy. It is believed that, together with flowers, such a person can convey accumulated problems. If you pay off, then the sign will not work.

But under no circumstances should you take indoor plants from people you doubt. Popular wisdom says that flowers transmit the evil eye, damage, fears, illnesses and curses. It is not so easy to cleanse yourself of this negativity.

It is also undesirable to accept indoor flowers from a sick person or if you yourself are currently sick.

When to water flowers - practical tips

At the genetic level, domestic plants “remember” how their ancestors lived in the wild. Hence, there is a special cycle of moisture supply, which includes favorable and unfavorable moments.

In the morning

Morning watering is the most beneficial. Plants wake up, come to life, and every drop of water will be put to good use by them. It is best to arm yourself with a watering can before 10 am, and in cases where the pots are on southern or eastern window sills - until 8-9 o’clock.

In the evening

The sign does not prohibit watering flowers in the evening, but in this case it is necessary to more accurately dose the amount of moisture so that it does not stagnate in the pots.

At night

Is it possible to water flowers at night? Signs warn against such a schedule. The temperature in the room drops, so it will take much longer for moisture to evaporate. The soil in the pot will rot within a few hours, and this is fraught with rotting of the roots and the appearance of mold. As a result, plants can become sick and even die.

At home, they inspect the plant for pests. Also, do not immediately move it to a warm room. Protect from drafts and use products to support immunity. If the orchid is in clayey, moisture-absorbing soil, after two days in the house it is transplanted into special soil for orchids or at least any light soil that has been disinfected. In the first day or two, the plant is not watered or sprayed; it is protected from direct sunlight, allowing it to recover from shock.

Plants and Vacations: How to Maintain Your Home Garden While Away

Supply water using improvised devices or special gadgets

Flower growers do not give up hope of entrusting watering to devices, and to some extent we have succeeded in this. Here's what's currently in use:

  • overturned water containers;
  • wicks made of gauze pulled from the basin;
  • systems with automatic watering (wick watering);
  • bloomats - devices with tubes and clay tips;
  • drip irrigation (plumbing).

Overturned water containers. For a vegetable garden, you can google a life hack with an inverted bottle: a bottle of water is stuck with the neck into dense soil and gradually moistens the soil next to the plant. Ready-made devices have been invented for the home - special glass balls, plastic birds and bugs with a clay base. But, in my personal experience, this method does not work in pots: we usually buy and mix light and loose soil, and the water completely drains out of such containers before our eyes, within a few hours at most. I did not find any difference with regular watering.

Gauze wicks stretched to pots from a basin of water. A wick can be called a material that is easily saturated with water and “pulls” it along itself in defiance of gravity. For example, you can cut strips of gauze, place one end in a bowl of water, and bury the other end in the ground. In this case, the flower must be above the water level (say, stand on a stool) so that the water moves only by wetting the material. If the flower is placed at the level of the pelvis or lower, the water, due to gravity, will drain quickly, abundantly and overflow through the pan. The wick method requires training and does not guarantee success. You need to select the width and length of the wicks, place the wicks correctly, you can experiment with materials (gauze, nylon and many synthetic fabrics work), and the location of the pots. And still, even for those who have “rehearsed” everything in advance, one of the wicks may dry out and stop moistening, and a separate pot may, on the contrary, “flood.”

Systems with automatic watering or wick watering. Pots have been invented that contain the components of wick irrigation: there is a water reservoir (like a basin) and a material or substrate that delivers water from the reservoir to the roots of the plant. Such pots are very popular in landscaping, because water flows into the reservoir and cannot cause a flood in the office; the systems are equipped with convenient handles and water level sensors (floats, windows). With a full tank, the plant can last up to two to three weeks. I use wick watering a lot and a few years ago I posted instructions on it on Instagram, for which I still receive thanks. The disadvantages are very significant: ready-made, convenient systems are expensive (like furniture or household appliances); “installing” a plant into the system is a transplant, and the tank can be completely filled only when the plant has grown well, one to three months after transplantation. The good news is that you can make wick systems yourself from any cans, plastic containers, shoelaces and cut-up tights - if you understand the principle.

Bloomats. A bloomat is a rubber tube connected to a hermetically sealed clay tip. The bloomat needs to be disassembled, soaked for an hour in a container with water (preferably the same one from where water will flow into the pot), collected under water and stuck into the pot, holding the end of the tube in the water. As I understand from my experiments, the clay from which the tip is made is very important. Original bloomates from Austria with a logo on the lid work perfectly, and through the clay of analogues from Germany and China, water goes into the ground in a few minutes. A good device, but it is difficult to find the original in Russia.

Saintpaulia

Saintpaulia, also known as “violet,” is a plant that easily propagates from a single healthy leaf. Therefore, if the rosette is damaged or rotten, or there are a large number of wilted leaves, it may not be worth spending time and energy on saving the entire plant. It is enough to cut healthy leaves, plant them in a pot with soil or put their petioles in water, without allowing the tissues of the pubescent leaf to get wet. And after some time, parts of the plant will give birth to new small Saintpaulias.
