Description of gloxinia and its types, recommendations for those who want to buy this flower
The houseplant gloxinia (sinningia) is a perennial herbaceous plant of small height, with a tuberous rhizome, and belongs to the Gesneriaceae.
Gloxinia looks like this: green thick, wide velvety leaves with a charming soft smell have juicy petioles, and the flowers are shaped like beautiful bells or shoes, located on peduncles of varying lengths. They have a very diverse range of colors, ranging from white to purple. They can be simple or terry, have a border or frills along the edge, as well as a speckled inner surface.
Flowering of indoor gloxinia usually begins in March and ends in April. The homeland of the plant is Brazil. Europe saw this flower only at the beginning of the nineteenth century. The language of flowers, created in the East to express feelings, designated gloxinia as “love at first sight.” It has been noticed that it has the ability to relieve stress after tiring work.
The most common types of gloxinia, names of varieties and their photos
Today, more than twenty types of flowers are known, from which breeders are constantly developing new varieties with magnificent flowers. The most common varieties in indoor floriculture include the following varieties:
Gloxinia speckled
This gloxinia is a perennial herbaceous plant with fleshy speckled shoots. It can reach seventy centimeters in height. The leaves are oval in shape with a pointed tip, their upper surface is green and slightly pubescent, and the inner surface is reddish. Purple-blue flowers with a mint scent are arranged in several on one long peduncle. Unlike other species, its flowering occurs from September to November.
Gloxinia regal
This is a small plant that grows to only ten centimeters in height. It has thick shoots with four to six pairs of leaves. The wide foliage, up to twenty centimeters long, is oval in shape and dark green in color. The upper surface is decorated with silver veins, and the inner surface is purple.
The purple flowers reach five centimeters in length and seven centimeters in diameter, they are slightly drooping downwards, the flower stalks grow up to twenty centimeters in height. Flowering occurs in summer.
Gloxinia is beautiful
In appearance, it is very similar to royal gloxinia, with the difference that the color of the foliage is lighter without silver veins. Flowers, in addition to violet, may also have a purple color.
Gloxinia tiny
This type of gloxinia belongs to low-growing plants, the height of the plant is no more than two and a half centimeters. Small leaves with a velvety surface barely reach one centimeter in length. Single flowers on stalks up to one and a half centimeters in height have corollas with a purple color on top and white below. Flowering occurs in the summer months.
Modern hybrid forms of gloxinia are divided into the following varieties based on plant diameter :
- Standard - more than 25 centimeters;
- Compact – 12 – 25 centimeters;
- Miniature – 5 – 12 centimeters;
- Microminiature - up to 5 centimeters.
Below is a catalog of the most popular gloxinia hybrids grown indoors, these are the following varieties:
- Yesenia with double flowers, beetroot or burgundy shown in the photo;
- Avanti with velvety bells of simple shape and a wide variety of colors;
- Kaiser Wilhelm has very large bell-shaped flowers, having a dark blue or dark purple base color and a clear, pure white border at the edges;
- Kaiser Friedrich blooms with large flowers of bright crimson with a white stripe along the edge;
- Blanche de Merou has large white flowers with a crimson edge;
- Brocade stands out for its luxurious double flowers of various colors and long flowering, from spring to autumn;
- The Empress is distinguished by its small leaf size, bells of an original shape and color (calico, picoti, speckled and others);
- Cleopatra is one of the most beautiful varietal varieties. Its large, white, double-shaped flowers with wavy edges are decorated with specks of dark violet, purple or lilac; a photo of these flowers is attached to the article;
- Winter cherry (Frost cherry) is famous for its large large white flowers with large dark cherry peas reminiscent of cherries;
- Eliza has beautiful white flowers adorned with a wide dark purple border and polka dots of the same color.
Description
Over decades of painstaking selection, many dozens of new varieties were bred, which in many ways surpassed the original species: the size of the flowers increased, new colors and shapes appeared...
Nowadays, you can find both real gloxinias with carrot roots (14 species of this plant are known) and synningias, the variety of which is almost endless.
Both plants, Gloxinia and Sinningia, belong to tropical plants of the Gesneriaceae family. The plants are usually low, they have thick fleshy leaves and large flowers in the form of bell-shaped gramophones of a variety of colors: from white to dark burgundy, from pale lilac to deep purple.
Gloxinia root is a tuber that can reach significant sizes even at home, and in its homeland, Latin America, it can reach a diameter of 40 cm!
The pot for the plant should be selected taking into account the size of the tuber: the pot should be only 5 cm larger than the diameter of the tuber.
The main feature of gloxinia is its seasonality: the plant rests in winter, the above-ground parts of the flower die off, life glimmers in the tuber, ready to awaken with the first rays of spring. When growing gloxinia, you need to remember these natural biorhythms! Inexperienced gardeners, upset, could throw away a plant that had withered by autumn...
In autumn, the tubers should be placed in dry sand and kept in a cool, dark room without watering until mid-winter. Then plant it in a new soil mixture and start watering. Closer to spring, the first pinkish leaves appear...
True gloxinia (a plant with an elongated root) in nature has a stem from 10 cm to one and a half meters long. Domestic Sinningia is practically stemless; thick green leaves grow directly from the tuber, forming a rosette on a low, thick base.
Gloxinia leaves, oblong or oval in shape, smooth (in true gloxinia) or shaggy, covered with hairs or down, range from very small, with a centimeter in diameter, to huge 20-centimeter, on a long powerful petiole. They grow in pairs (opposite) or in groups of three or four, forming a low ground rosette. Typically the leaves are thick, fleshy, velvety, and bright green.
But the special charm of gloxinia, of course, is its flowers! Flowers can be on a long stalk (from 1 to 15 cm) or almost without it. In accordance with the name, the most common flower shape is a bell (or “gramophone”) with an elongated tube and a corolla divided into 5 petal parts. The color of the flowers is very different; In addition to monochromatic flowers, there are speckled bells, with a bright border along the edge, with strokes and even tiger coloring...
There are terry and simple gloxinias, velvety and calico, with amazing patterns along the edge of the flower and almost plain... The petals can be curved outward, they can have wavy edges. Inside the flower there are five stamens with four anthers each and a long straight pistil. With proper care, up to 20 buds can appear on one plant at once!
Gloxinia grows best on light windowsills, but does not tolerate direct sunlight. In the sun, burn spots may appear on the leaves, and the flowers will bloom prematurely. The best option would be a light but slightly shaded window.
After flowering, the fruit appears - a cone-shaped box up to 1 cm long, filled with small brown seeds in the form of ellipsoids up to 1 mm in size.
Tips for those who want to buy a gloxinia flower
When buying an already planted gloxinia, you need to inspect its leaves; they should be elastic and free of any stains or pests.
If tubers are purchased, they must be quite dense, elastic and have a diameter of at least four centimeters. On their upper part there are small depressions with buds or small velvety sprouts. If they are absent, then the tuber is not suitable for planting.
Depending on the variety, the price of gloxinia in a pot can range from two hundred rubles to a thousand. A good tuber costs an average of two hundred rubles.
"Queen of May"
Gloxinia terry variety "Queen of May" can be recognized by the extensive scarlet border on the edges of the petals, which smoothly spreads into barely noticeable speckles on a white background all the way to the throat. in size , up to 7 cm in diameter. In the second and subsequent flowering, the outline may fade. In the sultry summer a delicate aroma is possible. The stems are thickened and of medium length. The leaves are pubescent, with clear silvery veins, up to 15 cm long.
When watering, it is important that water does not get on the foliage and petals, so it is better to fill the tray.
The variety pleases with long and abundant flowering. Medium-length petioles with buds appear on the compact bush.
The flowers of Gloxinia "Yesenia" are medium in size with multi-row petals, which are arranged in a velvety gramophone of rich burgundy color.
Belongs to tender varieties. It is a compact bush with short powerful cuttings and fairly large double flowers. The petals are white with red-pink droplets; at the base they create a yellow cup with inconspicuous specks. The leaves are serrated along the edges, bright green in color with folds on the veins. Sometimes the buds have long scarlet streaks in the middle of the petals. Gloxinia of this variety received the parallel name “Lady Jane”.
Common diseases and pests of gloxinia, their control
Most of the diseases that gloxinia suffers from are caused by improper care, most often by excessive watering, which causes rotting of the roots. Contaminated soil can also become a source of infection.
Tuber rotting
Rotting of tubers is a common and very dangerous disease of gloxinia and is provoked by overwatering. The foliage of the flower begins to wither, the stems turn brown and then begin to rot.
In this case, you need to remove the plant from the pot and inspect the tuber. If pockets of rot are found, they need to be removed, the leaves should be trimmed and healthy ones should be tried to be rooted. The peeled tuber is placed in a solution of potassium permanganate for half an hour, then dried, and the sections are treated with activated carbon.
After this, it must be planted in sterilized soil. During the first time after replanting, you only need to slightly moisten the soil.
Fusarium
Fusarium is a fungal disease that penetrates a plant from contaminated soil; the rapid development of the disease is facilitated by irregular watering , high air humidity and lack of nutrients.
The leaves begin to wither, curl, and turn brown. You can save the plant by replanting it in healthy soil and treating it with a fungicide (Topaz, Fundazol and others).

Gray rot
When infected with gray rot, all parts of the plant are affected. The stem begins to turn black, the leaves become covered with a gray coating, and subsequently the gloxinia tissues soften and become covered with watery dark brown spots.
Infection occurs when the soil is very waterlogged. If the disease is detected in the initial stage, the affected areas can be removed and the remaining parts treated with a fungicide. If the plant is severely affected, it must be destroyed immediately.
Powdery mildew
If powdery mildew appears on gloxinia, it means the room temperature is low and humidity is high. This may also indicate a violation of the irrigation regime or an excess of nitrogen in the soil.
When infected, all parts of the plant become covered with a white coating that resembles flour. New leaves and buds grow deformed. The disease is controlled using fungicides.
Rust mushrooms
The presence of rust fungi on gloxinia can be determined by the appearance of bubbles of different colors on the inner surface of the leaves. Then the upper surface becomes covered with yellow spots. Infected leaves should be removed and the rest should be sprayed with a fungicide.
Late blight
Very often, gloxinia is affected by late blight, and if it is not detected in time, the plant can die very quickly . Infected gloxinia stops growing, withers and becomes covered with dark spots. Over time, the stems and leaves begin to rot. It is necessary to treat the plant with preparations that contain copper (Bordeaux mixture and others). If this does not help, you need to completely destroy the plant.
Pests and diseases
The most dangerous disease for crops is gray rot, which is a consequence of improper care, namely, waterlogging and stagnation of water in the soil. In this case, gloxinia leaves become covered with brown spots. To avoid this, proper care is necessary, but once the disease occurs, it must be cured. To do this, remove damaged areas and treat the plant with a fungicide. In addition, the crop must be protected from diseases such as late blight, blackleg and powdery mildew, for the treatment of which foundationazole is used. Prevention can also be carried out by treating the crop with phytosporin.
But this is not the entire list of troubles that can befall a flower. Significant damage is caused by pests, among which the most dangerous are:
Thrips - infection of a crop with them is characterized by the appearance of light streaks and dots on the leaves, which then dry out, become brown on the underside, and the edges curl up;
Cyclament mites are quite small, they cannot be distinguished with the naked eye, and a large accumulation of them looks like a layer of dust. Its appearance on a plant can be determined by the deformation and thickening of the leaves and their curling. The flower's buds quickly wither and the tops of the shoots dry out;
Spider mites - live on the underside of the leaf and feed on its cell sap. It is determined by the presence of white spots at the early stage of infection and cobwebs at the later stage.
In addition to the fact that thrips infect gloxinia leaves, their larvae go into the soil, so the top layer must be replaced. The diseased plant must be treated three times with insecticides (karbofos, fitoverm) with an interval of one week. Ticks are also hatched, but the soil does not change.
Problems of improper gloxinia content
When growing gloxinia, other problems may arise that are not associated with infection by any disease or pest damage. The most common ones include the following:
- There may be several answers to the question why gloxinia does not bloom. This can be caused by a lack of light, low temperature and high humidity, non-compliance with the dormant period, a lack of potassium and phosphorus and an excess of nitrogen in the soil;
- But if gloxinia’s buds rot and fall off, this is caused by short daylight hours during the flowering period and a lack of nutrients;
- If gloxinia does not go dormant in the first year of life, there is no need to worry. The fact is that a plant grown from seeds has not yet formed a tuber, so it does not retire, since in such conditions it will not be able to survive the winter.
The same applies to those plants that are grown from a very small tuber. Starting from the second year of life, you can send gloxinia to rest, creating special conditions for it . To do this, after flowering has ended, reduce watering to a minimum, stop feeding, cut off the leaves and send the plant to a dark place;
- Gloxinia leaves become discolored. Discoloration of leaves is associated with a lack of light and non-compliance with the feeding regime;
- Gloxinia leaves curl. Curling of leaves may be due to direct sunlight hitting the plant;
- Dark spots appear on flowers and buds. Spots on flowers appear due to water getting on them during watering;
- Gloxinia leaves turn yellow. Yellowing of leaves can be caused by a number of reasons: high or low air humidity, direct sunlight or excessive fertilizing;
- Gloxinia leaves turn red. This may indicate a lack of potassium and phosphorus fertilizers in the soil.

Gloxinia is one of the beautiful flowering plants. Indeed, flowers of some varieties simply fascinate with their luxurious and unusual appearance. With proper care, it can become a magnificent decoration of any interior, producing more than twenty buds at the same time and creating a comfortable and peaceful atmosphere in the house.
Common varieties of terry gloxinia
Terry gloxinia is a very beautiful indoor plant that has always attracted gardeners with its large flowers and fleshy soft leaves. Today there are a large number of species of gloxinia. There are more than 70 terry varieties. Moreover, each individual variety has its own characteristics.
Caring for terry gloxinia depends on the characteristics of the species.
It is terry gloxinias that are considered the most beautiful and adapted for growing indoors. These plants have a tuberous root system. Let's take a closer look at which types of terry gloxinia are the most common.
"Madame Margaret"
Attracts the eye with huge bright flowers with crimson-red petals framed by a white wavy border. There are specimens without bordering. After hibernation, the plant forms a compact bush with small peduncles and resembles an elegant bouquet.
Like all gloxinia terry varieties, it prefers diffused light for 14 hours, moderate soil moisture and warmth. Before going into dormancy, the flower needs feeding. For these purposes, flower growers recommend potassium monophosphate and warn about the exclusion of nitrogen-containing additives.
Each bud of this variety has its own characteristics. The flowers are united by a rose-like shape and delicate white-cream and scarlet shades of the petals. At the same time, there is absolutely no symmetry in the arrangement of the color scheme. Chaotic colors add impressiveness to the velvet flower. Some petals may have a white border, while others may have a rich scarlet border. At the same time, more than a dozen tall flower stalks can form on a mature flowerpot. "Miss" received its name for its inconsistency in flowering. Can amaze with light and very bright purple shades. Sometimes the flowers do not open completely.
The flowerpot does not like cramped conditions. A pot with a diameter of 15 cm or more will be comfortable for him. There should be no heavily branched crops and no drafts on the windowsill where he lives.
Some characteristics of gloxinia
Calico Gloxinia has distinctive speckles on its petals.
All varieties of gloxinia are usually divided into simple and double. Simple plants have empty flowers inside, while double ones are distinguished by their splendor. They look simply gorgeous, as the petals are somewhat reminiscent of delicate velvet.
According to the color of the corolla, terry varieties are divided into three types. These are calico, tiger and plain. With monochromatic ones everything is clear. Calico varieties are distinguished by the presence of specks on the petals. Terry, in addition to specks, are also distinguished by a clear border along the edges of the petals. It is worth noting that the more unique the color of the petals, the more difficult it is to give the plant everything it needs during the care process.
Also, double flowers have two types of petal shapes: tidea and bells. In this case, the tidea are distinguished by a characteristic convexity on one side. To many it resembles a woman's shoe. The bells have a more regular shape. Among the terry varieties there are many more bells.
Types and varieties
There are more than 20 species of gloxinia. In apartment conditions, only Gloxinia royal and Gloxinia beautiful are grown, as well as numerous hybrid forms of these plants. Let's look at the varieties of gloxinia.
Gloxinia royale is easily recognized by its bell-shaped flowers and thickened stem rising 10-15 cm. The wild variety has purple flowers up to 5 cm long; hybrid forms with bell-shaped flowers (tidea) are distinguished by various shades of flowers.
Gloxinia regal Gloxinia regal Gloxinia regal Gloxinia regal
Gloxinia is beautiful, unlike the previous species, it does not have a pronounced stem. Its wide, pubescent leaves grow on short petioles, and the flowers of this species are wide, tubular, and directed upward.
There are a huge number of hybrid forms of Gloxinia beautiful, which differ in plant height, flower color and shape. Among them there are regular, double and semi-double varieties. Here are some interesting and memorable varieties:
- Scarlet is a double variety with red flowers with a barely noticeable light stripe along the edge of the petals;
- Red Storm is a double variety of dark red color, shaped like a rose;
- Mont Blanc is a semi-double variety with white petals, their edges are wavy;
- calico varieties are distinguished by the unusual coloring of the petals with small dots;
- Lilac mist is a semi-double variety of soft lilac color;
- Zephyr is a terry variety of soft pink color;
- Tigrina Red is a two-color variety, the middle of the flower resembles chintz, the edges of the petals have an intense red color, the flowers are not double;
- Kaiser Friedrich is a very popular two-color, non-double gloxinia variety with a light center, distinguished by very large flowers.

Gloxinia Kaiser Wilhelm and Winter Cherry
A very popular variety is Gloxinia Kaiser Wilhelm. He is loved very much for his unpretentiousness. This flower grows quickly and can adapt well to any changes in the surrounding microclimate. This is an excellent option for beginning gardeners.
Gloxinia Kaiser Wilhelm differs from other varieties in being less whimsical.
Kaiser Wilhelm is distinguished by a large number of fleshy leaves that form a voluminous bush. The only drawback is the late flowering of this plant. Gloxinias of this variety usually begin to bloom only in the third or fourth year of life. But on the other hand, they produce a lot of buds at once, which is why a profusely flowering, bright bush develops.
The flowers of this plant have a very rich dark purple color. At the same time, a white border with a sharp transition is clearly visible along the edges. It all looks elegant and beautiful. Moreover, the petals are very velvety and soft to the touch.
One of the most beautiful types of terry gloxinia is Winter (Frosty) Cherry. This plant is distinguished by large white flowers that are covered with red or dark burgundy dots. It looks just great in a bouquet.
But caring for this variety is somewhat more difficult. The correct temperature and lighting are of great importance for the plant. Too bright light or excessive shadow - all this has a bad effect on the condition of the plant. At the same time, the flower reacts very sharply to excess moisture in the soil.
This gloxinia usually blooms in the spring, ending flowering in mid-summer. At the same time, even an adult plant looks quite compact, but at the same time very lush. This is all thanks to the thick stems and leaves of Gloxinia Winter Cherry, variegated flowers that are located quite close to each other.
Description of terry type. Popular varieties
Gloxinia is a tuberous perennial. The owner of juicy, large leaves and a shortened stem. The leaves are velvety. The seed material is small.
Terry varieties, depending on the color of the buds, can be divided into:
- plain;
- calico;
- brindle.
Thus, single-color buds have only one shade. There are various speckles on calico. And tiger flowers, in addition to all kinds of dots, also have rims along the edge of the flowers. It just so happens that the more attractive the color of the buds, the more difficult it is to care for.
Double gloxinias have two types of flowers: bells and tidea. Tides are characterized by a convexity on one side, which is why many flower owners compare such buds to a shoe. But bells can boast of the correct shape. By the way, there are more varieties with bells.
We suggest considering terry gloxinias, the varieties of which are popular with us:
- Kaiser Wilhelm. The variety is quite unpretentious. Grows quickly and adapts well to various conditions. If you decide to grow gloxinia for the first time, then this is what you need. This variety has many fleshy leaves, which is why the bush has a very voluminous appearance. Among its shortcomings is only that it begins to bloom late. Once you plant the Kaiser Wilhelm variety, you won't see it right away. It will appear only after the third year, but the abundance of blossoming buds will completely compensate for the difficulties of a long wait. The flower buds of this variety are purple in color. It gradually moves towards the edge into a white border. The velvet petals look very touching to the touch among the lush foliage.
There are other good varieties of gloxinia, but in comparison with those described above, they cannot boast of long-lasting flowering, or caring for them is too complicated, which does not allow you to grow them at home, and, as a result, will cause disappointment.
Gloxinia Cleopatra and Yesenia
Gloxinia Cleopatra is distinguished by particularly intense flowering.
Terry gloxinia variety Cleopatra is very popular. It was bred artificially, so growing the plant at home is not so difficult. This variety amazes many with its exquisite waviness of petals. The fact is that Cleopatra blooms very profusely. In this case, double flowers consist of light pink or almost white petals, the edges of which are wavy and fuzzy. Due to this, it seems that the further from the middle, the wider the bell.
Often at the edges of the petals you can see small dark peas, which closer to the middle all merge into burgundy or purple lines. Due to the fact that the flower stalks of the plant are erect, it gives the impression of a real bouquet in a pot.
Typically, a plant of this variety produces buds in April and blooms until autumn. At the same time, regular, proper feeding makes it possible to achieve even greater saturation and fullness of the petals. But there is no need to allow excess fertilizer, as the plant will begin to produce more leaves than buds.
Another very popular variety is Gloxinia Yesenia. This flower can reach 30 cm in height if grown correctly. But the bush is so lush that everything looks very harmonious. Gloxinia variety Yesenia has snow-white flowers. This plant is often called the Bride.
It usually blooms from March to May. But sometimes the release of buds can last until July. The main thing in growing this variety is to prevent dry air and excess moisture in the soil. Otherwise, the perfectly white flowers will begin to disappear, starting to dry out from the edges.
Attractive appearance
Scarlet is a houseplant from the category of double gloxinias, which is colored in strawberry tones. There is a white border at the edges of the petals. The stems are strong but low. The bushes are compact. This variety of gloxinia is characterized by bouquet flowering.
Gloxinia Bohemia is interesting for its terry bright red petals with a pink border. Bohemia bushes are compact and the stems are not very tall.
The type of double flowers Merry Dancers is quite popular. Gloxinia Merry Dancers is intriguing with its lemon neck, white center petals and blue edges.
Gloxinia Negro received its name due to its large dark double flowers of a purple hue. If you look at the plant up close, it seems that the petals have a velvety tint. The stems of the flower are short, due to which the bush is small in size.
Blanche de Meru is a special variety, as it is characterized by the presence of rather large flowers with a crimson border.

Gloxinia Multi Belz Mix is represented by large double flowers, which in their shape resemble gramophones. They can be purple and pink in color. On 1 bush during the flowering period there are up to 20 flowers at the same time. She is quite demanding of a lot of light.
Gloxinia Tiger Blue is very popular among gardeners. The throat of the flowers is white, and the border is purple. The plant blooms profusely only if it is provided with proper care.
The rather interesting Gloxinia Prince Albert is a perennial plant. This variety has large purple flowers, and there are quite a lot of them on the bush. The height of the stem does not exceed 25 cm.
Gloxinia variety Brokada
One of the most beloved and unpretentious varieties of gardeners is Gloxinia variety Brokada. This plant can bloom in both red and blue. At the same time, there is no pattern on the petals; they are all monochromatic and quite bright, which creates a unique composition in the pot.
Gloxinia Hollywood is one of the most capricious and whimsical of its kind.
This plant is distinguished by its unusualness. The fact is that in this variety the rosette itself is very compact, and the flowers seem simply gigantic in comparison. Sometimes the border of the peduncle has a clear white color. But this can be difficult to achieve at home.
Gloxinia Brokada is also distinguished by the fact that its flowering is very long and abundant. At one time, the plant can produce even 25 buds. Gradually blooming, they create a beautiful ball of flowers, while the flowers are located very close to each other, it can even be difficult to separate them with your hands.
In appearance and to the touch, the petals are velvety and pleasant. At the same time, it is surprising that it is the Gloxinia variety Brokada that has flowers that last the longest on the peduncle, without disappearing or falling off. For all other varieties, the bud life cycle is not so long.
In addition to those mentioned, there are many more gorgeous varieties of terry gloxinia. Thus, Gloxinia Hollywood is popular among breeders. But it is not recommended for beginners to grow it, since due to its capriciousness it can disappear if not properly cared for, which will cause disappointment. The same goes for Gloxinia Avanti.
So, the main varieties and varieties of terry gloxinias are considered.
Achieving flowering is quite simple if you constantly and properly care for such plants.
And after each flowering, it will be necessary to cut off the flower stalks so that the plants can again delight everyone with their colorful flowers next time.
Reproduction of Gloxinia
This interesting plant can be propagated by seeds, tubers or leaves. You can read about tubers and seeds below in the article, but now let's look at propagation by leaves. This is a very simple method that is accessible to everyone. First you need to find a strong, healthy leaf with a stem up to 4 cm on the mother plant and pick it.
Leaf propagation
The plucked Gloxinia leaf is placed in a container of water, and sometimes immediately planted in the ground. Rooting occurs almost the same way, it’s just that in water you can see how the roots are formed and you can trace the process, but in the ground you need to wait until the plant begins to grow in order to understand that it has taken root.
Photo propagation of Gloxinia leaves
If you choose the water method, you must first place the leaf in a container of water, and when it has roots, plant it in the ground. To grow this crop, you need a certain amount of land; only then can you achieve maximum color and reduce the risk of diseases and pests. The soil should have a pH of 5.9-6.9. It is made from part turf soil, 2 parts leaf soil, part humus and part sand.
When planting is completed, the crop is covered with film and removed only for watering or ventilation. When the first young leaves appear, you can completely remove the film.
Reproduction of Gloxinia by tubers
The second method of propagating Gloxinia is by dividing the tubers. A healthy tuber is taken out of the ground in the spring, when sprouts appear on it, then you need to examine it thoroughly and cut off all damaged areas so as not to provoke the development of the disease.
Important! The method of dividing a tuber is very painful for the plant itself, so it is used very rarely. Typically, gloxinia planted in this way often get sick and may simply not take root.. Photo propagation of Gloxinia by tubers
Photo propagation of Gloxinia by tubers
To divide a gloxinia tuber, you need to use only a very sharp knife, disinfected in a solution of potassium permanganate. They cut clearly, carefully, in one movement to minimize damage. Each cut piece should have at least one sprout. The cut areas are dried and only then can individual sprouts be planted in pots.
To make sure that everything is in order with the plant, you can use several transparent plastic cups for planting; through them you will see the white roots (healthy) or dark (sick), and whether there is any growth at all! It is very important to water the planted plants regularly so that the soil does not dry out, but there should not be an abundance of water. Water the sprouts in trays so that moisture does not fall on the ground part
Reproduction of Gloxinia by seeds
The seed method of propagating Gloxinia at home is the most labor-intensive of all, so it is rarely used, and sprouts do not always appear. But breeders and hobbyists use it successfully.
To get a plant from seeds, you must first prepare the soil (the composition described above is quite suitable). Seeds are sown around the end of January or early February. The seeds are very small, for ease they are usually mixed with soil and then scattered on the ground
There is no need to cover them with soil, but after planting it is important to moisten the soil well with a spray bottle and cover it with film
Important! Young Gloxinia sprouts obtained from seeds are difficult to care for. They react sharply to any omission in care. Place the container in a bright, warm place, open it as needed and water it (spraying)
The first shoots may appear in 2 or 5 weeks - it’s hard to guess. The sprouts are grown as seedlings, and when they grow up, they are transplanted into separate pots

The center of the flower is white, with purple spots. The buds are large, terry. The edges of the petals are violet, black or purple.
Variety "Madonna"
The leaves of the plant are green and thick. The flowers are large, double, white with fringe along the edges. The petals are arranged in many rows. The variety grows quickly and is very easy to care for. Flowering does not last long. After flowering, the leaves and stems begin to die off, they are cut off, leaving two centimeters from the soil level.
"Queen of May"
Medium-sized bush, green leaves with silver veins. Belongs to terry varieties. The color of the flower is white with a massive pink border and speckled spots in the middle. In hot weather the plant has a pleasant smell. The stem is thick. When watering a flower, it is necessary to take into account some requirements, for example, not allowing water to get on the stems and leaves. It's better to add it to the pallet.
"Kaiser Wilhelm"
An unpretentious plant that quickly gets used to environmental changes. It blooms quickly, but in the third year of life. Small bush, many flowers and leaves. The color of the petals is rich purple with a white border around the edges. They are soft and velvety to the touch. Depending on the habitat conditions, there may be many flowers or single buds on long stems.
Variety "Brocade"
The color is bright red or blue without patterns or spots. Blooms for a long time and abundantly. Blooming flowers can form a dense, beautiful cap due to their number. Flowers have a fairly long life cycle. One plant can grow 20-25 buds.
If you decide to grow indoor plants, then gloxinia will be the best option for beginning gardeners. You need to carefully study gloxinias, photos and names of varieties, care rules and choose the right options just for you. Such flowers will give the room a sophisticated look and a pleasant aroma.
This video will help you understand the variety of gloxinia varieties. Enjoy watching:
Gloxinia charlize
Beautiful Sinningia, better known to gardeners as gloxinia, has been receiving increased attention from indoor plant lovers for several decades. What is so attractive about gloxinias, photos and names of varieties of which are more numerous than ever?
For many flower growers, their love for this culture began in childhood with large velvet bells stolen from their grandmother’s windowsill.
In those days, it was almost impossible to find gloxinia other than deep purple or crimson in color.
Today, breeders have obtained hundreds of plants of amazing beauty, variety of shapes and colors, ready to grow and bloom magnificently in indoor conditions.
It’s unlikely that our grandmothers suspected that studying photos and names of gloxinia varieties could take more than one hour. The collections of current fans of this flower include:
- white and pink, purple and red varieties;
- varieties with polka dot flowers;
- plants with bells, decorated along the edge with a bright contrasting border.
To simplify classification, flower growers have introduced a division of gloxinias according to the size of the bush and the characteristics of the corollas.
Classification of Gloxinia varieties
Depending on the size of the aboveground part of the plant and the rosette formed, hybrid gloxinias are divided into miniatures, which do not grow more than 20 cm, and standard plants, the diameter of the leaf rosette of which can exceed 30 cm. There are also a number of varieties that occupy an intermediate position in this classification.
The corollas of modern plants may consist of one or several rows of petals. Terry gloxinias are incredibly popular, because their bell-shaped flowers are more magnificent than simple ones, and their shape most closely resembles a camellia or a garden rose.
Based on the type of color, modern varieties of gloxinia are divided into plain, calico and tiger.
- Solid flowers are evenly colored in different tones from white, light pink or purple to purple and deep violet. Only the spot deep in the neck may be lighter or white.
- Corollas with a calico type of color are covered with uniform spots or speckles.
- Tigers are decorated not only with elegant polka dots, but also with a border around the edge of the petals.
Having seen the inscription gloxinia “Tigrina Red”, Blue or White on the package with the tuber, you can be sure that the manufacturer offers to grow a flower with an original corolla of a rich red or purple hue. However, it will not be possible to obtain the same plant from seeds, because hybrids reproduce only vegetatively.
In some varieties of gloxinia, the flowers have the shape not of the usual bell, but of a thydea, that is, a shoe, more often found in other plants belonging to the Gesneriaceae.
Gloxinias love bright, but not direct rays of the sun, are afraid of drafts and sudden temperature changes, and respond very negatively to excessive watering. It may seem that gloxinia is very capricious. But those who master plant care will not regret it. With due attention, the green pet blooms regularly from spring to autumn.
By autumn, the number of buds decreases, and then the aboveground part of the gloxinia fades. The plant begins a dormant period, during which life is preserved only in the tuber.
At home, a gloxinia plant can be obtained from a tuber planted in the spring or from seeds. You can propagate your favorite variety by rooting a healthy leaf. Thanks to this, many cultivated varieties are now more accessible than before.
Both foreign and Russian enthusiasts are engaged in the selection of gloxinia. The industrial varieties offered to amateur flower growers by large flower growing companies in Holland and other countries are widely known. Their assortment includes simple and double gloxinias, conventionally grouped according to the shape of the flowers, the size of the corollas and rosettes.
Group of varieties of gloxinia Avante, Avanti
A good example is Gloxinia Avante or Avanti. This group of varieties includes many color options. Most often, gloxinias of this variety are offered in the form of seed sets for self-cultivation. Mature plants have a compact leaf rosette, against which simple velvety flowers seem even larger and more impressive.
The most common Avanti hybrids include gloxinia:
- Avanti Light Violet;
- profusely blooming white, with wavy edges Avanti White;
- with light lilac or bluish flowers, decorated with a wide white wavy border Avanti Blue with White Edge, or Blue lace;
- Scarlet, with velvety wine-red Avanti Scarlet flowers.
One of the terry Dutch hybrids, widely cultivated all over the world, is called Yesenia. A medium or large plant up to 30 cm high forms a rosette of green leaves with short petioles, above which spectacular double flowers rise.
Half-opened corollas resemble pink buds, but when a crimson or crimson flower on a short peduncle opens completely, a white or pinkish border appears along the edge of the petals.
The Gloxinia Yesenia hybrid, as in the photo, is characterized by long bouquet flowering.
Gloxinia Hollywood
The purple flowers of Gloxinia Hollywood seem to be cut out of thin velvet. The petals of a simple flower can be darker or lighter. At the same time, the deep neck always has a light lemon tint and is decorated with contrasting purple dots. The hybrid is characterized by lush mass flowering, a small rosette of green leaves and high decorative value.
Among the mass of options, the most striking and memorable is the so-called Black Hollywood with very dark, almost black flowers without a light core.
Gloxinia Kaiser Wilhelm
Gloxinia Kaiser Wilhelm has simple, deep purple flowers with a mottled center and a bright white edge. When fully bloomed, the edges of the petals become exquisitely wavy.
The buds open on tall peduncles rising above a loose rosette of velvety leaves. With proper care, the plant pleases with lush bouquet flowering.
In bright light, the color of Gloxinia Kaiser Wilhelm, in the photo, becomes less thick and deep.
Gloxinia Prince Albert
Another variety of gloxinia with simple but very spectacular flowers also bears the name of one of the royal persons. Gloxinia Prince Albert forms a leaf rosette with a diameter of up to 25 cm.
Above the green leaves on the middle peduncles, purple, sometimes almost black, corollas open. The wavy edge gives the flowers additional grace. The rich color extends not only to the petals, but also to the neck.
A light, yellowish spot with purple specks is barely noticeable in the depths of the corolla.
Gloxinia Kaiser Friedrich
A bright crimson corolla with a white border and a small light spot at the bottom of the neck are the characteristic features of the Gloxinia Kaiser Friedrich shown in the photo. The outer side of the spectacular bell is painted white, the petals along the edge resemble a cute shuttlecock. To achieve mass flowering, this orth requires careful care, nutritional support and moderate soil moisture.
Gloxinia Blanche de Meru
The Gloxinia Blanche de Meru shown in the photo is easily recognizable by its large flowers with crimson petals and a white throat. The leaf rosette of the plant reaches 25 cm in diameter, and good care helps to maintain not only velvety large leaves, but also stimulates long-term, lush flowering from late spring to early autumn.
If gloxinia is exposed to direct sunlight, both velvety leaves and flowers may suffer. There are fewer of them, the opening buds are paler in color and fade faster.
Gloxinia Violacea
Gloxinia Violacea can be called a classic flower. The variety is characterized by simple purple flowers with a white, speckled throat and wavy edges of the petals.
The gloxinia Violacea plant has standard sizes; the corollas in full bloom have a diameter of about 8 cm. Since gloxinia bells sit on high peduncles, the plant needs support during mass flowering.
The variety stands out for its long, uninterrupted flowering from June to the end of August.
Gloxinia Shagane
Gloxinia selection is carried out not only by specialists from large floriculture centers, but also by amateur enthusiasts. In recent years, such proprietary varieties from Russian and foreign breeders have gained incredible popularity.
Today there are thousands of varieties of gloxinia, photos and names of which awaken imagination, and the appearance of the flowers forces flower growers to replenish their collections again and again.
Terry gloxinia with large bell-shaped flowers, light leaves and harmonious peduncles was bred by breeder E. Slyusar. Gloxinia Shagane is a very beautiful purple tiger. The corollas with a short greenish throat are decorated with a bright violet-blue border. Most of the petals are white and strewn with purple speckles of varying sizes and intensities.
Gloxinia Cleopatra
Calico-colored gloxinias are no less spectacular than tigrines or plain flowers. Chronic Gloxinia Cleopatra immediately stands out against the background of other varieties. It has large double flowers of white color, which are richly decorated with purple and lilac polka dots.
The edges of the petals are corrugated, and the speckled pattern on them becomes smaller and lighter. The flower has a pinkish neck, also powdered with crimson and crimson spots and streaks.
A strong plant with large leaves thanks to its short peduncles, it is very compact and, with proper care, maintains lush bouquet flowering.
About the origin of the species
In the wild, this plant of the Gesneriev family has existed for a long time, hiding in the rocky crevices of Brazil and other countries of the Southern continent. At the end of the 18th century, a scientist from Germany, Benjamin Peter Gloksin, came across a small plant with bright, beautiful speckled flowers. He brought a new species to Europe, giving the flower his name.
Gloxinia settled on the windowsills of houses and began to be grown in greenhouses. To create varieties, breeders were only suitable for 2 species: royal gloxinia and beautiful. But they were also able to provide a gorgeous floral variety that pleases the eye.
A few decades after the Latin American plant came to Europe, another scientist, Wilhelm Sinning, discovered a flower unfamiliar to him in his greenhouse. Having started growing it, the botanist gave the plant the name “sinningia”, not suspecting that the crop had already been called gloxinia.
Description of the species
In South America, this plant is found everywhere: on the rocks of Mexico, in the forests of Peru, on the slopes of the Andes. An alien from the tropics also feels comfortable on the windowsills of Eurasia. The plant is easy to care for and easy to propagate.
The variety of species differs in the color of the inflorescences, their shape (bells or shoes), the number and arrangement of petals, and the size of the leaves.
Note! Flowers with petals arranged in several rows are especially attractive. This makes double flowers look like roses.
If we consider gloxinia species as a whole, we can identify common features that are characteristic of all plants.
Features of Gloxinia
Sign | Description |
Bush | Low - usually a little more than 10 cm (although in the wild it can reach 1.5 m). |
Root | In real gloxinia it looks like a carrot. Even in domestic plants it can reach 0.4 m. In Sinningia it is a fleshy tuber. |
Leaves | Thick, green, sitting on a powerful stalk. They can be shaggy and smooth, oval and oblong, with hairs or fluff resembling velvet. Some varieties have a small diameter - up to 1 cm, others reach 0.2 m. They grow in groups of 3-4 pieces. or oppositely located. Form a low ground rosette. |
Flowers | The most common form is an elongated gramophone* on a peduncle from 1 to 15 cm long. There are 5 stamens inside, each with 4 anthers. A straight ring-shaped pistil rises between them (may be absent in hybrids). |
Fetus | A small cone-shaped box (up to 1 cm). Inside contains a seed - brown ellipsoids 1 mm long. |
*Some believe that the name Gloxinia comes from the shape of the inflorescence. After all, the word “bell” in German sounds like glocke.
Bushes come in different sizes. It depends on the diameter of the foliage rosettes:
All varieties of gloxinia are light-loving plants, but they can get burned from direct sunlight.
Note! A common feature of culture is seasonality. Even at home, gloxinias sleep in winter. Therefore, you should not be alarmed by the fact that the ground part dies off by November. The tubers remain viable and, with proper care, will sprout in the spring.
Care rules for growing gloxinia flowers in a pot at home (with video)
Every gardener, having acquired gloxinia, is interested in how to care for it at home. The first thing you need to pay attention to is the nature of the lighting. The plant belongs to the category of light-loving representatives of the flora, so it is extremely important to place flower pots in places where there is an abundance of light. But remember that we are not talking about direct sunlight - they will be destructive for your “green pet”.
Lighting should be long-lasting, bright, but diffused. If you are going to place a flowerpot on a windowsill in a room facing south, then it is better to do this in the spring, when the rays of the sun are still quite soft.
In summer, eastern windows will be ideal for gloxinia. If it is not possible to provide the flower with such a “place of residence,” then the southern windows should be slightly shaded.
Rule No. 1 – location: light, but not direct sun.
Proper care of gloxinia grown in a pot at home is impossible without organizing a temperature regime that is comfortable for the plant. Temperature changes are harmful to him. While the tuber is sprouting, it is necessary to maintain +25 degrees in the room; after rooting occurs, the daytime temperature can be reduced to +22 degrees, and the night temperature to +18 degrees.
If the thermometer drops below this mark, then the development of the green “pet” of the greenhouse will slow down. Rule #2 – Temperature: Warm.
During intensive growth and flowering, gloxinia needs sufficiently humidified air. If this condition is neglected, the plant will begin to develop more slowly, the leaves will gradually curl, and the buds will fall off without blooming. Growing gloxinia flowers at home is based on maintaining the required level of air humidity by the grower himself. For this purpose, it is necessary to place flowerpots with plants on pallets covered with a wet layer of expanded clay or moss. You can spray water indoors using a spray bottle. Only in this case you should act extremely carefully and spray the liquid away from the flowers.
Important! Do not wet the leaves! If drops of water fall on their velvety surface, the plant will become spotted and lose its decorative appearance. Rule No. 3 – air humidity: provide artificially high humidity.

Common varieties
Knowing what gloxinia looks like, it’s easier to choose a houseplant to decorate your home interior. Here you can sometimes get confused - there is such a variety of subspecies and varieties of terry specimens.
Subspecies of Gloxinia
Name | Peculiarities |
Gloxinia perennis | It is translated as “year-round” because it has a short rest period. You can recognize the variety by its leaf blades - they are reddish below. The fleshy shoots are speckled. Axillary flowers are collected on one peduncle. The bush reaches a height of 0.5-0.7 m. |
Royal | Gloxinia is truly worthy of queens due to its beauty. It stands out for its velvety texture of dark green oval leaves, arranged in 4-6 pairs on a thick stem up to 10 cm high. Slightly drooping large bells with a diameter of 7 cm are painted in a dark purple hue. They are crowned with a long peduncle (about 20 cm). |
Beautiful Gloxinia | At first glance it resembles a royal one, but is different: · a variety of color shades (purple, pink, blue, white, violet); · lighter color of the plate. The leaves are broadly oval, with dense short fluff, located on long stalks. If you look closely, you can see the original relief pattern of veins. |
Tiny | It stands out for its small legs containing 1 flower. The corollas have a short, two-colored storz – purple on top, white below. It fully justifies its name - the bush barely reaches 2.5 cm. Small on the plant and velvety oval leaves up to 1 cm long. |
Based on subspecies, breeders create new beautiful varieties. The most popular among them:
- Yesenia is a delicate “rose” of rich beetroot color;
- Winter cherry - its burgundy petals are speckled with white;
- Southern night - with small inflorescences of a black and burgundy hue;
- Tigrina mix - the variety got its name because of the unusual pattern on lilac, crimson, lilac or white petals;
- Tiger Empress - large wine-red bells have wavy edges;
- Blue gloxinia Avanti - petals, painted in all shades of blue, have a white border along the edge;
- Blue and white - distinguished by an original combination of colors: the white edging from the edge smoothly turns into a blue tint, which, in turn, turns into purple;
- Cleopatra is a wonderful representative of chintz coloring. The white bells seem to be powdered with purple and pinkish peas;
- Blanche de Meru is characterized by a large velvety rosette, from which crimson open gramophones with a white core peek out;
- Blonde Giselle is grace itself. Large bells, dotted with purple or pinkish specks, bloom on the pubescent stem; there is a purple tint in the necks;
Variety Lady Jane
- Madame Margaret - the crimson petals have wavy edges framed by a narrow white border;
- Kaiser Friedrich is characterized by a bright crimson color of the petals framed by a wavy white border; the creamy neck is strewn with small specks;
- Gloxinia white - can be recognized by its large snow-white petals with a greenish-purple throat;
- in Gloxinia Courage, large white gramophones are diluted with pink specks;
- Merlin - behind the rich dark purple specks it is difficult to discern the true white shade of the petals;
- Lady Jane - dense small peas are scattered among the white flowers;
- Prins Albert - in this variety, a smooth transition from blue-violet to deep black visually transforms the petals into a royal mantle;
- pink gloxinia Tale in the middle is painted crimson, the lighter throat is strewn with dark specks;
- Under the name Fusion gloxinia they mean hybrid varieties that stand out for their variety of shapes and colors.
The color of gloxinia is decisive. It is the bright shades that primarily attract lovers of unusual indoor plants. Based on this feature, it is possible to create a classification based on shade.

Interesting information
The described plants are classified according to various characteristics. There is a division of a flower according to its characteristics. Based on the number of rows in which the petals are located, simple and double flowers are distinguished. Simple species have one row, while terry specimens have two or more rows. Double flowers have a similar appearance to a rose or large carnation. Among the terry varieties, one can highlight the Japanese variety, bred by the best Japanese breeders, Brokada f1. Flower growers love her very much.

Brocade is found in red and blue colors. There are not only plain petals. In the Brocade Red and White version, the base is pink or red with a necessarily white frame. Features of colors:
- a white picoti border that clearly stands out against a red or blue background;
- during flowering the bouquet is lush;
- the period of abundant flowering is long;
- compactness, short stature.
A biennial plant can bloom 25 buds. The leaves are velvety in appearance and small in size. If you compare the flower with an ordinary rosette, its size seems huge.
If we consider the color of the corollas, we can distinguish tigrines, flowers of the same color and calico variants. It is common for calico specimens to have peas or specks of the same diameter on a single-color petal that differ from the background. There are either peas or grains on the tigers; the addition is a frame around the edges. On solid colors there is a possibility of having white centers.
The shape of the flowers can also vary. Based on this characteristic, we can distinguish tidea and bells. In appearance, Gloxinia tidea resembles a shoe. These flowers have 5 petals, they are slightly voluminous in some places, elongated.
Gloxinia is classified as a Taurus sign. If this sign has a pot of flowers in the house, then it will definitely bring wealth, material well-being, and prosperity to its owner. A person’s psycho-emotional state will significantly improve, and physically the body will be filled with energy and strength. The energy in the house is returning to normal. However, during the acquisition process, it is important not to confuse it with another indoor plant, for example, Saintpaulia is similar to it.
When buying a flower, you need to carefully consider the leaves. They must be free of any stains or traces of harmful microorganisms. Healthy leaves have elasticity. If you want to buy tubers, you need to touch them to check for a sufficient level of elasticity and density.
Sinningia is deservedly popular all over the world. They love it not only for its beauty and pleasant smell, but also for its special properties (in the form of a talisman, amulet). A flower can be an excellent gift for loved ones or an excellent purchase for your own home.
When and how does gloxinia bloom?
To grow a tropical flower in the Russian climate comfortably, you need to know some of the plant’s characteristics. Depending on the varieties, gloxinia is distinguished by external characteristics. Culture also has something in common in biological development.
Flowering periods
Gloxinia produces its first buds in March and can delight you with beautiful flowers until late autumn. There are varieties in which the first color lasts 3 months. Then, after a short break, new buds appear.
Important! In order for a tropical plant to produce color, the room must maintain an optimal temperature of 20-22 degrees.
From the end of September, the bushes fade and prepare for winter rest. This point should be taken into account when caring for gloxinia. Watering is gradually being phased out. The flower pot is taken out to a cool room where it is maintained at +10 degrees.
Appearance of flowers
The table above provides a brief description of the buds. To this we can add that flowers, depending on the variety, are classified according to the following characteristics:
- bell-shaped - tubular, cubic, funnel-shaped;
- in the direction of growth - looking up or down;
- by the number of petals (at least 5) – double, semi-double and simple (with 1 row);
- along the corolla - with straight or bent petals;
- fringed, corrugated or not.
The gloxinia flower has a rich palette. These are single-color, 2-color and multi-color. Tigrin is characterized by a contrasting monochromatic border along the edge of the petal. It may differ in shade strength from the main color or be contrasting with it. Flowers strewn with specks are called calico.
From 8 to 30 buds are simultaneously formed on one bush. Their diameter ranges from 8-12 cm. The number of gramophones depends on the number of rosettes throwing out 1 soft peduncle, which can be short (2 cm) or long (25 cm).
Note! In the latter option, the flowers are suitable for cutting into a bouquet that will remain fresh for several days.
Gloxinia is not just a beautiful decorative flower. It is credited with positive energy, which has a calming effect on the nervous system and uplifts the mood. The plant absorbs harmful impurities from the air, helping to cleanse the atmosphere. If you place gloxinia in the nursery, this will provide the baby with a restful sleep.
Gloxinia (sinningia) Gloxinia
Gloxinia is a herbaceous plant with velvety leaves and bell-shaped flowers from the Gesneriaceae family. In the first half of the 19th century. From the tropical forests of Brazil, a very beautiful herbaceous plant with original bell-shaped flowers came to Europe - Sinningia, named after the German gardener W.
Sinning, who lived in the last century. Sinningia received the botanical name “Gloxinia” because of the shape of the flower, since “Glocke” means “bell” in German.
As a result of long-term breeding work, hybrid varieties with larger flowers of various colors were developed: pink, red, purple, with a variety of halftones and shades.
Gloxinia care:
Lighting : Gloxinias grow well on windows of any orientation. But on northern windows they stretch out and do not bloom so profusely; on southern windows, shading is necessary during the midday hours. The best results were obtained when grown on eastern and western windows.
Temperature : The optimal temperature in summer is 22-25 C.
Humidity : To increase air humidity, gloxinias can be placed on pallets with wet expanded clay or sand. Direct spraying of fuzzy leaves and especially flowers can lead to rotting of the plant.
Watering : Regular watering is required, into the edge of the pot or from the tray.
Feeding: Feed with fertilizers for tuberous plants in half concentration. “Effecton”, “Kemira” and “Flower” also give good results. The first feeding is after the appearance of buds and then once every 1-2 weeks. After gloxinia fades, fertilizing is gradually reduced. Some varieties of gloxinia can bloom again after some rest.
Soil : The soil should be very loose and breathable - it is made up of a mixture of leaf, peat soil, sand (1: 1: 1/2).
Growing feature: Gloxinias do not tolerate drafts, waterlogging of the soil, watering with cold water and water getting into the center of the tuber and on the leaves.
How to preserve gloxinia in winter
From mid-September, watering should be gradually reduced, then stopped altogether. The leaves dry out and fall off, the roots die. A period of rest begins. It is very important for further flowering to properly preserve gloxinia until spring. There are two ways to store tubers.
The first is to dig the tuber out of the ground and store it in sand in a cool place with a temperature of 12-140.C. The second, simpler one is to store them in the pot in which they grew, covering the tuber on top with a layer of sand 2-4 cm thick (so that the tubers do not start growing prematurely). Pots should be stored in a cool place.
Once every month and a half (or more often if the tuber storage temperature is higher than the required 12-140), the soil around the tuber must be moistened so that the tubers do not dry out. At the end of February, the tubers are dug up, checked for rotten areas and replanted in a new soil mixture. It is better to use shallow pots with a diameter of 12 cm and a height of 8-9 cm.
A layer of drainage is poured onto the bottom to 1/4 of the height of the pot. The tuber is planted with the hole up, level with the soil, or buried to half the height.
Reproduction of Gloxinia
Growing gloxinia from seeds: You need to sow the seeds in January-February on the surface of the soil, on a thin layer of damp sand in a container with plenty of drainage holes. Do not sprinkle the seeds. Crops must be covered with glass or film. At a temperature of 18-200.
Seedlings appear in two to three weeks. It is necessary to water the crops from below by immersing the container with seeds in a tray of warm water, since when watering from above, the seeds lying on the surface are washed away. The seedlings dive when they have 3 - 4 pairs of leaves, in pots with a diameter of 3 - 5 cm.
As the pot outgrows, 2-3 more replantings may be necessary. It is recommended to pinch off the first buds, then subsequent flowering will be more abundant and the flowers will be larger. From the time of sowing to flowering, it takes about 7-8 months.
Important! Young plants may not have a winter dormancy period in the first year! But this will not affect subsequent flowering in any way.
Growing Gloxinia from leaf cuttings: Gloxinia leaves take root easily. Moreover, leaves taken in spring or early summer will definitely bloom in the same year. For propagation, you need to choose a large, sufficiently developed and absolutely healthy leaf. The optimal petiole length is 1-2 cm.
Leaves take root in water or in coarse river sand. When rooting in sand, the container with the leaf must be covered with a glass jar or plastic bag. Roots appear within 3-6 weeks. Then the leaf is planted in the ground.
You can place a stick or a piece of foam under the leaf to avoid contact of the leaf blade with the ground. When the baby has collected 3-4 pairs of leaves, the mother leaf can be cut by sprinkling the cut area with coal. If there are several children, you can divide the nodules by digging them out of the ground along with the leaf.
If a leaf you planted sat for a long time and then suddenly dried out, do not rush to throw away the “dead” plant. There could be a tuber left in the ground that will sprout in the spring. You can carefully dig up and see if the tuber has rotted
Buying an adult plant
When purchasing gloxinia, pay attention to the condition of the plant. It should look healthy, not flooded (flooded plants have a green coating on the surface of the soil) and have many unopened buds. When purchasing synningias, give preference to stockier plants with shortened internodes. Such plants will have longer and more abundant flowering.
