Peony Coral Supreme: photo and description, reviews

Description of peony Coral Supreme

The Coral Supreme peony, as seen in the photo, is characterized by large spreading bushes. The shoots are strong, 90-100 cm high, and have a red tint at the base. They can easily withstand the load under the weight of flowers even after rain. This species belongs to the category of herbaceous peonies.

This hybrid does not require additional support.

Along the entire length of the shoots, narrowed dark green leaves are evenly located, which completely cover the bush. Thanks to this feature, the plant remains decorative throughout the season, even after flowering. Leaves and shoots take on a purple hue in autumn.

Important! Peony “Coral Supreme” is a light-loving plant; when placed in the shade, the crop grows leaves and blooms sparingly.

This hybrid is highly frost-resistant and easily tolerates temperatures down to -34 degrees. Therefore, the Coral Supreme peony is recommended for growing in the middle climatic zone.

After planting in a permanent place, the bush grows and begins to bloom fully in the 3rd year. Before this, it is recommended to remove single buds in order to redirect nutrition to the development of roots and shoots.

The hybrid is characterized by a powerful root system up to 1 m long. Therefore, an adult plant can provide itself with moisture even in the driest periods. In the upper part of the root system there are renewal buds, from which shoots grow every spring. This species can grow in one place for 10 years, but by 5-6 years the flowers begin to noticeably become smaller, so the bushes need to be replanted.

Features of flowering peony variety Coral Supreme

This hybrid belongs to the category of semi-double herbaceous peonies. Flowering period is mid-early. Its buds appear at the end of May and bloom in the first half of June. Flowering lasts 2-3 weeks, depending on weather conditions. During this period, the plant emits a pleasant, non-intrusive aroma.

Peony Coral Supreme is characterized by cupped, semi-double flowers. When blooming, their diameter is 18-20 cm. Initially, the color of the flowers is salmon-coral-pink with a light yellow center. The number of buds directly depends on the lighting and planting density of the bushes.

When fully bloomed, peony flowers acquire a pearlescent tint.

Application in design

Peony "Coral Supreme" is a self-sufficient plant, so it can be grown as a single bush against a background of a green lawn or conifers, as well as in group planting in combination with other white or dark varieties.

The Coral Supreme peony looks beautiful as a frame for a garden path, as well as in a flower garden in combination with other perennials.

What varieties are there?

The flowering period of peonies is determined by the formation of large buds; all plant varieties bloom at approximately the same time, and then an amazing aroma spreads throughout the entire holiday village. Gardeners note that each variety of peonies has its own aroma, but, in general, it is a single smell that will be remembered for a lifetime.

Most of all, gardeners value peonies of the Pink variety. This is an intraspecific variety bred by American breeders. Its inflorescences are anemoid-shaped and its leaves are terry. The flowers are light, coral pink. A fully opened bud reaches an average diameter of up to 12 centimeters. The bush grows up to 70 centimeters.

The main significance of this species is that it has strong stems that do not break in the wind or when cut into bouquets. The leaf color is light green. This is a mid-late variety, its aroma is weakly expressed.

Hawaiian

Peonies of the Hawaiian variety have only positive reviews from gardeners. It is classified as a universally herbaceous plant; it blooms once, but profusely. It is an intraspecific variety of Pink Hawaiian; its bush reaches a meter in height. The opened bud has a diameter of 20 centimeters. The petals are semi-double, the main color is milky, apricot-colored. In the center the inflorescence is decorated with stamens of a bright creamy hue. Hawaiian peonies smell like fresh hay. Gardeners highly value this variety, noting its good resistance to winter cold and early flowering.

Characteristics of the Beach variety are delicate coral tones. The variety is also milky-flowering. The height of the bush is at least 90 centimeters. The leaves along the entire stem are dark green in color. The open flower reaches 17 centimeters.

This variety is distinguished by a flower in the shape of a water lotus. It begins to bloom early and blooms for a long time. The petals of the flower are semi-double, decorated with a core of bright yellow tset. Valued by gardeners for its frost resistance and drought resistance.

The Fairy peony variety is a hybrid of several species. Brought out by US breeders in 1972. It is a low shrub plant, growing only up to 75 centimeters. The flowers are round in shape and have semi-double petals. The main color of Fay is pink, with a pronounced coral tone. The petals are darker in color towards the center of the flower. The opened bud grows to only 16 centimeters in diameter.

Fey has a delicate aroma that gives the bouquet real elegance. The leaves are light green, carved, similar to decorative ones. Fairies begin to bloom very early, which attracts all gardeners.

Reproduction methods

The interspecific hybrid "Coral Supreme" reproduces in the same way as other species, by dividing the rhizome. This must be done in August or early September so that the seedlings can take root before the arrival of persistent frosts.

You can only divide the root of a plant older than 3-4 years. To do this, you need to dig up the mother liquor, clear it of soil, and rinse it with water. Then put the Coral Supreme bush in a cool place for several hours so that the roots soften slightly. This will make the division process much easier.

After this, use a sharp knife to cut the root into several “divisions”, each of them should have 2-3 renewal buds, and the same number of well-developed root shoots. After this, sprinkle the cuttings with charcoal and plant the seedlings in a permanent place.

Important! If a large number of renewal buds are left on the cuttings, they will not allow the root system to fully develop, since they will take away most of the nutrients.

Landing rules

In order for the Coral Supreme peony bush to fully grow and bloom luxuriantly, it must first be planted correctly. For the plant, you need to choose an open sunny area where moisture does not stagnate. In this case, the place must be protected from drafts. Therefore, it can be planted near a tree or tall shrub, but so that these crops do not block the sunlight.

The optimal period for planting the Coral Supreme peony is mid-September. The hybrid prefers to grow in loams with low or neutral acidity levels. If the soil is heavy clay, then the situation can be corrected by adding humus and peat.

Landing algorithm:

  1. Prepare a hole 50 cm wide and deep.
  2. Lay down a layer of drainage 5-7 cm thick.
  3. Sprinkle soil on top and make a slight rise in the center.
  4. Place a seedling on it, straighten the roots.
  5. Sprinkle with soil so that the renewal buds are 2-3 cm below the soil level.
  6. Compact the surface and water generously.

When planting, it is recommended to add a nutritious soil mixture of turf, leaf soil, humus and peat in a ratio of 2:1:1:1. You should also additionally add 40 g of superphosphate and 30 g of potassium sulfide.

Important! Nitrogen fertilizers cannot be added to the hole, as they have a depressing effect on the root system.

If you deepen the renewal buds too much when planting, the plant will not bloom, and if you leave them on top, they will freeze in winter.

Features of cultivation

Growing peonies is not at all difficult, since they do not require special care. However, it is still necessary to follow some rules.

Choosing a place and landing

It is best to place the plant in a sunny and open area. However, there should be no drafts there, so it is best to plant it next to low bushes. In addition, the hole must be dug in advance, 10-14 days before planting. It should be 70 centimeters both deep and wide. At the very bottom you need to put a layer of drainage up to 20 centimeters. It can be gravel, crushed brick, or perlite. Then you need to put a mixture of sand, leaf humus, and peat on top. They must be taken in equal proportions. The layer should not exceed 25 centimeters.

After this time has passed, you can begin planting peonies. The bush must be placed on well-established soil. Then you need to carefully straighten all the roots so that they are evenly spaced. Sprinkle everything on top with regular substrate and compact the surface thoroughly. It is also necessary to ensure that the buds are not too deep. After this, the soil must be watered generously with either water or a manganese solution.

You can put a small layer of mulch on top, which will allow you to retain moisture longer. In addition, in this case, a huge number of weeds will not grow. Both spruce branches and regular compost can be used as mulch.

For 2 weeks after planting, you need to water the bush daily, after which watering is done as needed. In cool weather, water once every 2 weeks, and on hot days you can do this daily. Fertilizers must be applied several times per season. Peony will need both superphosphate and potassium.

After the peonies have bloomed, they can be trimmed or left on the bush. Some gardeners leave the buds after flowering to obtain seeds. However, when grown by seed, they may not retain all of their characteristics, which is especially true for hybrid plants.

If a bush grows in one place for a long time, then its root system will not grow, so after 7-8 years it is necessary to transplant the peonies to another place.

Aftercare

The Coral Supreme peony needs to be watered only at the initial stage of growth. During the hot period, this should be done 2 times a week, and the rest of the time - when the top layer dries. It is also important to loosen the soil to allow air to reach the roots.

To prevent the growth of weeds and reduce moisture evaporation, it is necessary to lay humus mulch 3-5 cm thick at the base of the bush. The growth of the above-ground part in the first year after planting will be slow, which is normal. This is due to the active growth of the root system. In the second year, shoots will begin to grow and, possibly, the formation of several buds. They should be removed so that the plant does not waste its energy.

There is no need to fertilize young seedlings under 3 years of age if fertilizers were applied during planting. In the future, every spring during the period of shoot growth, the Coral Supreme peony must be watered with a solution of mullein (1:10) or chicken droppings (1:15). And during the appearance of buds, use phosphorus-potassium mineral fertilizers.

Preparing for winter

At the end of October, the shoots of the Coral Supreme peony need to be cut off at the base. You should also mulch the soil with a layer of humus 7-10 cm thick. The cover should be removed in early spring, without waiting for sustained heat, as this can lead to overheating of the renewal buds. Seedlings up to 3 years old need to be covered for the winter. For this it is better to use spruce spruce branches.

Important! Adult peony bushes "Coral Supreme" do not need shelter for the winter.

Pests and diseases

This interspecific hybrid is characterized by increased resistance to common pests and crop diseases. But if the growing conditions are inappropriate, the plant’s immunity decreases.

Possible problems:

  1. Powdery mildew. This disease develops at high humidity. It is characterized by a white coating on the leaves, which interferes with the process of photosynthesis. As a result, the plates fade. For treatment it is recommended to use “Topaz”, “Skor”.

  2. Cladosporiosis. A characteristic sign of damage is the appearance of brown spots on the leaves. Subsequently they increase in size. For treatment, it is recommended to spray the bushes with Bordeaux mixture twice every 7 days.

  3. Ants. These insects attack the peony during the formation of buds, which leads to their deformation. To eliminate the problem, it is necessary to treat the plant with Inta-vir.

  4. Aphid. This pest feeds on the sap of leaves and young shoots. Forms a whole colony. For destruction it is recommended to carry out treatment
