Tiger orchid (Grammatophyllum speciosum)
It is called the giant orchid, the sugarcane orchid, and the queen orchid . The largest and tallest specimen is located in Indonesia and lives in the Bogor Botanical Garden. It is listed in the Guinness Book of Records. The plant weighs two tons, with a height of 7.62 m.
Peduncles are about 3 m long. Each has up to 100 flowers with a diameter of 15 cm. The basic tone of the petals is yellow, green or greenish-yellow. On top there is a characteristic “tiger” color of brown, burgundy or purple spots. The lip is yellow, with a contrasting edge or central spot.
Among the grammatophyllums there are compact species that can be grown at home . These are plants of the sympodial type with pseudobulbs ranging in size from 20 to 40 cm. The flowers have a waxy structure. The petals are slightly curved from the center. On tall peduncles there are up to 60 buds.
