general description
Considering the features of such a plant as surfinia, cultivation and care (photo presented below), it is worth starting with a general description of the variety. This garden flower is a close relative of the petunia. However, this is a separate variety. Surfinia is an ampel-type hybrid, which is characterized by significant shoot growth. Another feature of the plant is its abundant flowering. This is why gardeners love surfinia so much.
Initially, surfinia was often grown from seeds. However, today vegetative techniques are more often used. This allows you to preserve the main characteristics of the species. Sulfinia profusely blooming (photo shown above) will become a spectacular decoration for hanging flowerpots and flower beds. At the same time, planting and care do not cause difficulties. In this case, any efforts of the gardener will be duly rewarded. The plant will bloom luxuriantly, impressing with its charm and bright colors.
Often the hanging plant is grown on balconies or loggias. Shoots develop very quickly. This allows you to cover empty spaces, as well as form a crown of lush flowering branches. The crown can fall in a spectacular waterfall or grow in a lush cap.
In warm climates, almost any variety will bloom luxuriantly, pleasing to the eye. But colder areas require more careful selection. Not every variety here can demonstrate high decorative qualities. A correctly selected variety develops a powerful root system, grows quickly and blooms profusely for a long time, sometimes up to three months. Flowers can reach 6 cm in diameter or even more. The range of bud colors is varied. You can choose a plant to suit your taste.
General information
The colors of the flowers are quite varied, as well as their shape. The inflorescences are large in size. The flowering time of surfinia lasts almost throughout the summer.
In botany, only 25 varieties of the crop are known, which have different shapes and colors of inflorescences. All varieties were obtained by crossing different types of petunias.
Even a novice gardener can grow this unusual flower, the main thing is to create the necessary conditions, and then it will delight its owner with bright flowers for many years.
Surfinia - a hybrid of petunia of Japanese selection
The plant was bred by Japanese breeders at the end of the last century. Gorgeous petunia with large bright flowers could not be grown in bad weather conditions. The Japanese wanted to adapt petunia to cultivation in difficult climatic conditions. As a result, breeders managed to develop a hanging plant - a type of petunia. The new culture did not propagate by seeds (did not produce them), only by cuttings.
Ampelous sulfinia with luxurious flowers of different shades - white with a dark eye, pink, blue, purple - has won the recognition of all gardeners in the world.
Having mastered the skills of growing this plant and learning how to properly care for it, you can get a wonderful decoration for your garden or apartment.

Varietal traits
Petunia surfinia belongs to numerous hybrids of bush petunia, in contrast to which it has long stems. Varietal traits allow the gardener to immediately distinguish the hanging plant from other species. The lateral erect stems of Surfinia fall down during the growth and appearance of flowers, creating a colorful waterfall.
Breeders have long tried to create hybrids of petunias through crossbreeding that would be resistant to pests and diseases. The result exceeded our wildest expectations.
The best representatives of Surfinia are:
- Salmon corduroy. Delicate pink or bright purple flowers grow profusely on shoots reaching a length of 80 cm.
- Burgundy. The deep maroon color is associated with fine wine. Hence the original name of the hybrid.
- Deep Purple. The lush bushes of the plant are decorated with many purple double flowers.
- Table White. Snow-white bell flowers delight the eye from spring until the first severe frosts.
- Parple corduroy. The hybrid has the longest branches - 1 m. The flower petals are purple in color, the core is dark.
Surfinia cultivation and care in open ground
This crop is warm and light-loving, so the bed for planting it must be chosen taking these features into account. For growth and development, the plant needs fertile soil, but it is still better to plant it in loam or sandy loam soil, pre-mixed with humus or compost. If surfinia is planted in acidic soil, then before planting it must be mixed with lime in a proportion of 300 grams per square meter of bed.
In addition to being nutritious, the soil must be light, loose and have good moisture holding capacity. We should not forget about drainage, which will prevent rotting of the root system. It must be at least five centimeters.
Young plants are mainly obtained from seed material, which is germinated at home by planting the seeds in an improvised greenhouse in February. Shoots appear two weeks after planting, after which they are planted in different pots. And when the young growth has five or seven leaf blades, they can be planted in open ground. Planting takes place in mid- or late April, when frosts on the soil are excluded.
Petunia is the parent of Surfinia. It can be grown when planted and cared for in open ground without much hassle, if you follow the rules of agricultural technology. You can find all the necessary recommendations in this article.
Who grew surfinias?
Diva Natalie™
The terrible secret of Europe - surfinia
So, surfinia is practically the same petunia, but a particularly successful hybrid, characterized by unusually powerful growth of hanging stems (up to 2 m) and such abundant flowering that it turns out to be a real waterfall of flowers. Their colors are different, but mostly saturated, with a dark or, conversely, light throat. The flowers are large, up to 6 cm in diameter. Flowering in the relatively warm climate of Europe lasts several months. What initial parental forms were used to obtain such luxurious plants is a secret of the manufacturing companies. Surfinias are usually propagated vegetatively, by cuttings, and ready-made seedlings are sold. But this season, surfinia seeds appeared on sale. It should be noted that in the conditions of the current very warm summer, surfinia grown from seeds looked rather modest in our country. And at the flower exhibition held at the All-Russian Exhibition Center in early September, there was no such stunning impression from the presented surfinias as in European countries. Still, apparently, in our climate there is not enough heat for it, and the summer season is too short.
As a consolation for flower lovers, we can say that the ordinary hybrid Multiflora petunia (Multiflora F-1), sown in February, blooms wonderfully, long and abundantly. Plant it in pots or boxes in rich, fertilized soil, water it, feed it, and it will delight you until late autumn. Even autumn frosts down to -3°C do not kill the flowers, and when warm days return, it will continue to bloom. One of the hybrid variety mixtures bloomed continuously in boxes on stands near my garden house from mid-June to the end of September.
If you have grown surfinia or petunia, which particularly struck a chord with you, then the plants you like can be propagated by cuttings. After all, petunia is a perennial plant. To do this, dig it up, replant it in a pot, cut off too long stems and store it in winter at a temperature of 12-14°C, good lighting and moderate watering. In February, move it to a warm and again bright place (temperature 20-22°C), resume watering, feed it, and it will grow. Cut young shoots with 2-3 pairs of leaves and a heel and plant them in clean sand, sprinkled with a 4 cm layer on good soil (8-10 cm layer of soil). Water the planting, cover it tightly with film and shade it. The cuttings should be constantly watered, sprayed and maintained at a temperature of 20-22°C. The cuttings root in 2-3 weeks, after which they are planted one by one in pots and grown further as seedlings.
Watering Surfinia
In order for the plant to grow well and flower abundantly, it must be watered regularly and in a timely manner.
Despite the fact that the crop is a drought-resistant species, in summer the overgrown root system requires a lot of moisture, so watering should be frequent. On particularly hot days, the soil should be moistened twice a day.
However, it is unnecessary to allow waterlogging, which will lead to rotting of the roots and death of the surfinia.
Conditions of detention
For abundant flowering of petunia surfinia, certain growing conditions must be observed.
- Planting should be done immediately in large pots with neutral sandy loam soil.
- Flower pots should be placed in a warm and well-lit place.
- It is better to plant outdoor petunias in an area protected from the wind.
An adult plant requires periodic feeding with mineral fertilizers, this is especially important in spring and autumn. In the summer, it is important not to allow the soil in the pots to dry out, but at the same time, an excess of moisture is unacceptable, since excessive moisture can lead to the death of the plant.
The first signs of the disease are yellowing of the leaves and brittleness of the branches. If there is insufficient watering, the petunia's foliage will thin out significantly and the flowers will be small. In such conditions, the plant is not able to bloom for a long time and intensively, so the bushes will have a pitiful, unpresentable appearance.
The formation of a lush surfinia bush involves pinching the shoots in a timely manner. This is required for all varieties of hanging plants. This is usually done on a young plant whose branches have reached 20-30 cm in length.
Pinching can be carried out until the desired fullness of the petunia is achieved, but this process slows down the flowering period. An older plant becomes rejuvenated by periodic pinching and produces slightly more flowers.
Soil for surfinia
The ideal soil for growing the crop is considered to be loam with an acidity of 5-6 pH; it also grows well in sandy soil. The plant can easily adapt to any soil, as long as it is fertile, light and loose.
When growing surfinia in flowerpots or containers, you can use a mixture of garden soil and humus. To make the substrate loose, add one part of sand, two parts of humus and three parts of base soil. Before planting surfinia, 5 centimeters of fine expanded clay should be placed at the bottom of the container as drainage. The florist should not forget about it when planting a flower in open ground.
In order for the soil mixture in the pot to retain moisture well, hydrogel or perlite should be added to it, and if the plant is planted in a garden bed, it should be mulched with a thick layer of sawdust or compost.
Methods of application
There are quite a few ways to use surfinia in home floriculture. As a rule, it is used to decorate terraces, balconies, gazebos and houses, placing them in hanging flowerpots. Often blooming waterfalls from this hybrid petunia decorate city streets in the old areas of European cities. Also, bright compositions are present in the decorations of outdoor cafes and restaurant areas.
Growing crops at home is a great way to transform your landscape or facade design, as well as emphasize your high taste preferences. And given the ease of caring for the crop, its unpretentiousness to living conditions and other advantages, such an activity brings only positive emotions.
The main thing is not to forget about the basic rules of planting and provide the plant with proper care. In this case, the time and effort spent will be justified in the form of abundant flowering.
Surfinia pot
In order for the culture to grow and develop normally, it is necessary to choose a spacious pot.
When planting a plant in a container, it should be taken into account that one surfinia should account for at least five liters of volume. No more than three plants should be planted in a thirty-liter pot.
It is also very important that the container has bottom and side drainage holes to improve the air permeability of the soil. If they are not there, you can make the holes yourself.
Beautiful and famous species of surfinia
Today there are about 10 species of surfinia (Table series). On their basis, the same number of terry-type hybrids have been bred, identified in the Surfinia Double series. Thus, each specimen of the Table series corresponds to a terry variety of the Double series. Let us list the most famous ampels of this group.
Surfinia transplant
The plant needs to be replanted only if there is a disturbance in normal growth, which can occur when the earthen ball becomes waterlogged, fungal diseases appear and the soil is updated to a looser and more nutritious one. It is best to replant in the spring, but if necessary, it can be done at any time of the year.
The plant should be replanted into a new pot, on the bottom of which expanded clay must first be laid. It will prevent stagnation of moisture and rotting of the roots. After laying the drainage, you need to carefully shake off the root system from the soil, remove its damaged areas and move the plant into a pot, filling the free spaces with soil. Then the soil needs to be lightly pressed and watered.
The culture adaptation time takes about two to three weeks, after which the plant will begin to grow again.
Surfinia ampelous: care and cultivation at home
Every plant, garden or home, needs care. To admire the long and lush flowering of ampelous surfinia, you need to properly care for it. When growing a plant at home, you need to take into account its exotic features.
Large sulfinia flowers look like an old gramophone
Note! Since overseas culture prefers a lot of light and warmth, you need to carefully choose the place where to place the plant or hang the flowerpot.
When growing at home, seedlings or cuttings are planted.
Growing surfinia from seeds is difficult even for experienced gardeners. The seeds are too small. Planting any plant begins with choosing quality seeds.
The soil, garden or store-bought, is calcined in the oven and disinfected. The soil needs to be loose, soft, fertilized.
Boarding order:
- Several seeds are laid out superficially in a pot or box with moistened soil and the container is covered with cellophane. If the seed is buried, then the top is lightly sprinkled with sand. If planted deeply, the seeds will not germinate.
- It is very convenient to sow in rows, the distance between which is 5 cm. The row sowing scheme will provide the seedlings with ventilation.
- Surfinia seeds will sprout if the air temperature is not lower than 25 °C.
- Sunlight should be soft, uniform, long-lasting (at least 12 hours).
- The soil is regularly sprayed, avoiding drying out and waterlogging. After 2 weeks, small sprouts will appear. It is difficult to grow seedlings from seedlings.
The film is not removed, creating greenhouse conditions. Next, provide the seedlings with proper care. To prevent it from stretching too much, the sprouts are taken into a room with an air temperature of 18-23 °C.
After 1.5-2 months, when the seedlings have grown a little, they will become crowded and begin to shade each other, and carefully pick. For large volumes of growing seedlings, the plant is picked twice.
After each watering, light inter-row loosening is carried out. Moderate watering and loosening will help avoid diseases such as “blackleg”.
After picking, water with a complex of mineral fertilizers, which contains a lot of phosphorus for the development of the root system and microelements, for example, Rooter.
Note! When planting a seedling, do not cover the growth point (rosette) with soil, otherwise the seedling may die.
Following the rule of soil moisture: watering only after the soil has dried will help avoid rotting of the roots. After watering, water should not flow out of the drainage holes. If it leaks, it means the plant was overwatered. From an excess of moisture in the soil, surfinia will turn yellow.
Once every 2 weeks, seedlings are fed with minerals, for example, nitroammophoska. Dilute 20 g of the product in a bucket (10 l) of water. In parallel with root fertilizing, foliar fertilizing is carried out with the same frequency. For this purpose, for example, Brexil is used.
To grow healthy and strong seedlings, you need the following conditions:
- air temperature 23-25 °C;
- compliance with cycles: watering, drying;
- diffused sunlight;
- easy loosening;
- mineral fertilizers: root, leaf.
It will take 3.5 months from the date of sowing the seeds to obtain small flowering bushes. By sowing the seeds at the end of January, by April you can get plants, which are then transplanted into flower pots and hanging baskets. Flowers are taken out onto terraces, balconies, and outside when it’s warm.
Important! Outdoors, flowers are hung under a canopy, since the extremely delicate foliage can be damaged by strong wind or rain. Ampelous surfinia is also planted in a flowerbed at the dacha.

Feeding surfinia
Surfinia loves fertilizers; it is thanks to regular fertilizing that the crop experiences active growth and flowering. The most effective fertilizers are liquid ones, which are dissolved in water and applied along with watering once a week.
After planting the plant in open ground or in a flowerpot, the soil should be fertilized with fertilizers containing nitrogen and phosphorus, or organic matter (compost) should be used, which is mixed into the planting soil mixture. Nitrogen is very important for the growth of shoots and their branching, and phosphorus affects the formation of strong and viable roots.
When the crop begins to bloom, it should be fertilized with complex fertilizers, which include phosphorus and potassium. They should be applied before the end of flowering. Kemira Lux or Plantofol can be used as such mixtures.
To increase the intensity of flowering and enlarge the inflorescences, gardeners use Zircon fertilizer. Surfinias planted in flower beds in fertile soil do not need such frequent feeding. It is enough to fertilize them only three times a season.
Ampelous petunias - surfinia, supertunia, calibrachoa
https://clck.ru/4h39c
Ampelous petunias - surfinia , supertunia, calibrachoa - are separated into a separate group of petunias because of the long hanging shoots on which a garland of flowers is formed.
Most often they are cultivated in hanging baskets, balcony boxes and tall vases. Surfinia is one of the cultivar groups of ampelous petunias, which was isolated from the genus of petunias due to the rapid growth of shoots, resistance to weather changes and abundant flowering.
The trademarks Surfinia and Supertunia appeared with the beginning of petunia propagation by vegetative means. Now these are brands that are extremely in demand in urban gardening, and without which not a single seasonal program of seedling producers can do. In the photo is Surfinia. Shihi Purple variety from left to right:
Burgundy, Shihi Purple, Sweet Pink, Baby Pink Vien, Victorian Yellow, Violet, Lavender Bouquet, Crasy Pink, White.
Features of the Shihi Purple surfinia series:
- Flower diameter is about 7 cm
- Variety of colors: dark burgundy, rich pink with veins, double pink and purple flowers, purple with veins, white, white with a yellow eye and veins (Burgundy, Shihi Purple, Sweet Pink, Baby Pink Vien, Victorian Yellow, Violet, Lavender Bouquet, Crazy Pink, White);
- Early and long flowering;
- Relatively fast shoot growth;
- Weather resistance;
- Resistance to mold diseases.
The unique adaptability of petunia and most of its variety series, such as surfinia, supertunia, calibrachoa, to various cultivation conditions, soils and climates, the simplicity of agricultural technology, the duration and brightness of flowering have made it one of the favorite crops of flower growers and landscapers.
Flowering period: Surfinias vegetate from the end of April until the onset of cold weather (+12). Time for planting seedlings: It is recommended to plant seedlings of ampelous petunia (surfinia) on cloudy days or in the evening, starting in mid-May. Surfinia is planted in open ground at a distance of 25-30 cm. In balcony boxes, containers, vases, the distance between plants can be reduced by one and a half times by planting 3 plants. After planting the seedlings, the soil is moistened abundantly, and the soil around the plants is mulched with peat or humus. Mulching allows the soil to retain moisture longer and protects plants during recurrent frosts. Conditions and care: Groups of ampelous petunias - surfinia, supertunia, calibrachoa - prefer dry, warm weather (above +15). Open sunny places with partial shade at midday are suitable for them. Ampelous petunias can be severely affected by the wind, so baskets and flowerpots with them should be placed in places protected from the wind. For lush growth and abundant flowering, plants are watered and sprayed with water 2-3 times a day in hot weather. During prolonged rains, shelter under a canopy is recommended. In unfavorable weather conditions, if growth and flowering are inhibited, ampelous petunias are treated with growth stimulants. The tops of young plants are pinched to stimulate tillering. In the summer, surfinias are provided with daily abundant watering with soft water and weekly fertilizing with complex fertilizers with microelements, alternating root feeding with foliar feeding - foliar, for example, 18 g of calcium nitrate plus 3-5 g of ferrous sulfate per 10 liters of water, spray on the leaves up to 3 -x o'clock in the afternoon. In many varieties of petunias, especially large-flowered and double forms, the appearance can be spoiled by wilted flowers. They are almost invisible in large areas, but can be clearly visible in flowerpots, flowerpots and small flower beds near paths. To improve the decorative effect of plantings, such flowers are removed. Partners: In flowerpots and containers, ampelous petunias are good on their own. Sometimes in garden design, surfinia is combined with zonal pelargonium, fuchsia, lobularia, helichrysum petiolare, chlorophytum, balsam, and sweet pea. In hanging baskets and window boxes they can be planted with other hanging plants, such as lobelia, ivy, green grass, ivy leaf, verbena, ivy leaf pelargonium, etc.
Supertunia (Superyunia Supercal terracotta) is distinguished by its early flowering period and spherical growth pattern. Flowers are medium size 5-6 cm.
Vegetative propagation of petunia, surfinia and calibrachoa
When propagating petunias, cuttings are often used. This method is used to propagate all calibrachoa cultivar groups (Million Bells, Superbells), as well as ampelous petunias (groups Surfinia, Futura, Colgado, Cascadias, Supertunia, Conchita, etc.). Terry varieties of petunias were previously propagated in this way, since when propagated by seed they produced a low percentage of terry plants.
Terry petunias are cut from February to May; ampelous petunias and calibrachoas can be cut all year round under favorable conditions (temperature 21-24 °C and supplementary lighting with lamps in winter).
The apical cuttings with 4-6 leaves are cut from the mother plants, the top two leaves are left, shortened by half, and planted in the soil at 1/4 of the length. The cuttings should be placed in the box quite tightly, at a distance of 1.5-2 cm from each other (or 500 pcs./m2). Then the boxes are covered with glass and placed in a bright place at a temperature of 21-24 °C.
The soil for cuttings can be used the same as for sowing petunia, but a layer of sand or perlite (2-2.5 cm) must be poured on top, spilled with a fungicide solution. The soil cannot be reused for cuttings.
When cuttings, you can use growth regulators that stimulate rooting (Heteroauxin, etc.), but if the conditions necessary for rooting are met, the cuttings will root well even without these substances. The main secret to success when cutting is to place the cuttings in the soil as quickly as possible, since 1-2 hours after cutting their ability to root drops sharply, even if they are stored in humid conditions.
During rooting, the cuttings are sprayed with water from a sprayer 1-2 times a day, making sure that the soil is moist but not damp. When the first signs of mold or “black leg” appear, watering is reduced, the boxes are ventilated, and diseased cuttings are removed. After 5-10 days, roots appear on petunia cuttings. Calibrachoa cuttings root more slowly - within 2 weeks or more.
As soon as the length of the roots on the cuttings reaches 1 - 1.5 cm, they can be transplanted into pots with a diameter of 5 cm. To obtain bushier plants, the seedlings are pinched above the 4-5th leaf. The tips of the shoots, cut off by pinching, can also be used for cuttings. If necessary, pinching can be repeated after 2 weeks. After a month or a month and a half, the overgrown plants are transplanted into pots with a diameter of 11-13 cm.
Caring for petunia and calibrachoa seedlings obtained from cuttings is almost no different from caring for seedlings obtained from seeds. The only difference is that ampelous petunias and calibrachoa require much more space for normal development, so the pots with them are placed more freely or hung above the racks.
Preserving queen cells for cuttings
From double petunias, the most decorative plants with the largest and most dense flowers are selected for queen cells. At the end of August - beginning of September, the bushes are carefully transplanted into containers or pots with a diameter of at least 15-17 cm and placed in greenhouses. The main conditions for preserving queen cells are low temperatures (10-12 °C), low soil moisture and not too dry air. Fertilizing in the autumn-winter period should be done infrequently (about once a month) and only phosphorus and potassium fertilizers should be used.
Mother plants of ampelous petunia and calibrachoa must be prepared in advance. For these purposes, it is necessary to select only young, well-developed plants grown from cuttings taken in late spring - early summer. It is advisable to immediately plant the plants selected for mother plants in large pots or carefully transplant them into large pots from small ones or into the soil on a greenhouse shelf, without disturbing the root system. If there is a lack of light (without additional illumination), the queen cells can be kept in the same conditions as for terry petunia, feeding 1-2 times a month with potassium fertilizers on the leaves. Cuttings can only be taken from such plants from the end of February. If it is possible to provide mother plants with lighting and a temperature of 15-22 ° C, they can be taken from cuttings at any time as they grow. Such plants need to be fed much more often - once every 7-10 days, alternating potash fertilizers with complex ones.

Surfinia flowering
The culture blooms throughout the summer. Surfinia's inflorescences are predominantly large, bright and numerous. Depending on the variety, their shades can vary from white to dark purple. There are also two-color varieties that look very original.
To ensure that surfinia does not lose its decorative value and does not stop blooming, it must be covered from rain with a film if it grows in a flowerbed or brought indoors if it is planted in a flowerpot or container.
Surfinia in landscape design
The cascading, or as it is also called, ampelous shape gives this petunia hybrid a truly luxurious look. Blooming surfinia can enhance any exterior, be it the porch of a wooden house or the terrace of a royal palace. It looks great on balconies, railings, street window sills, in hanging flowerpots and tall flowerpots. Vertical structures with these colors look especially impressive - colorful walls, fences, gazebos, balls and columns will not leave anyone indifferent.

Surfinia pruning
Almost all cultures form independently and do not need human intervention. However, if the gardener wants to make the bush more fluffy, he will need to pinch out the young shoots from time to time.
To preserve the decorative appearance of the plant, faded buds should be removed. Thus, you can not only improve the appearance of the crop, but also reduce the load on it.
Surfinia or calibrachoa
Currently, among decorative flowers, flowering ampels (translated as “hanging vase”) - plants with long stems - have become extremely popular.
Ampelous petunia, surfinia and calibrachoa are especially loved. At a superficial glance, they are practically indistinguishable, but each has its own characteristics.
Surfinia in winter
Caring for a plant during the dormant period has a number of subtleties:
- With the onset of autumn, the branches are cut off, leaving only 20 centimeters of the existing length.
- If the flowers grew in a flowerbed, they are transplanted into a container and brought into a cool room with temperatures not lower than + 5 degrees.
- The container or flowerpot is wrapped so that the root system can better withstand the winter.
- The soil should be enriched with fertilizers that have remained in it since the summer. When transferring a crop from a flowerbed, you need to add a little dry complex fertilizer to the soil.
- Surfinia should be kept only in a bright room.
- To prevent the soil from drying out, the plants need to be watered from time to time.
- In the spring, before taking the crop outside, it should be hardened by taking containers or flowerpots with surfinia out into the fresh air for several hours, while protecting them from direct sunlight. After two to three weeks of adaptation, the plants can be planted in the ground or placed in their usual places in the open air.
Sulfinia ampelous: care and cultivation at home from cuttings
What is the difference between ampelous petunia and cascading petunia?
The method of planting surfinia from cuttings, according to flower growers, is simpler than growing from seeds. The procedure is as follows:
- Take the apical part of 5-6 cm and cut it off. Remove a few lower leaves and flower stalks.
- The prepared cuttings are planted in cassettes filled with clean peat. First, the peat is moistened by lowering the cassettes into clean warm water, preventing water from flowing in from above. The soil is moistened with water that enters through the drain holes from below.
- Use a pencil to make indentations in the soil of the cassette cells. Each cutting is dipped in the preparation “Kornevin” (for 100% rooting of plants), lightly shaken, lowered all the way into the hole, and compacted.
- Cover with glass or film and take it into the house. The room temperature should not fall below 22-23 °C. Do not leave cuttings in direct sunlight.
Note! Day and night temperatures in the room should be the same, so cuttings should not be left in the nursery, where it is cool at night and warm during the day.
After half a month, the cuttings will take root. They are transplanted into seedlings. Then water with succinic acid (2 g per 10 l). The grown plants are then transplanted into pots, baskets, or open ground.
Propagation of Surfinia by cuttings
Since surfinia does not form seeds, it can only be propagated vegetatively using cuttings. The cuttings have good survival rate and grow quickly. Cuttings of the plant should be done in the fall. The root system of the planting material is formed in about a week and a half.
To obtain cuttings, use pruning shears to separate the tops of the plant branches by at least 10 centimeters, making an oblique cut. All leaf plates, except the top two, must be completely removed, and the remaining ones must be cut to half.
The finished cuttings should be placed in a root growth stimulator for a day. After time has passed, they must be removed and planted at a distance of two centimeters in the ground with a mixture based on humus, garden soil and sand in equal quantities. Before planting the cuttings, the soil is watered. The planting material should be deepened into the soil by a quarter. After planting, the cuttings need to be covered with film, creating an impromptu mini-greenhouse.
From time to time the soil needs to be moistened. The greenhouse should be ventilated and the cuttings should be sprayed every day, while maintaining the temperature from 21 to 24 degrees. After they take root and produce several leaf blades, they can be planted, and when there are seven leaves, the young plants should be transferred to a permanent place of growth in open ground (late April) or in a flowerpot or container.

How to propagate petunia from cuttings correctly?
Terry petunia is truly magnificent - lush flowers of bright colors, reminiscent of chic roses, look very impressive in flower pots at home and on the balcony. No less beautiful are the lacy fringed varieties, as well as varieties with large flowers and climbing ampelous petunias. There is one “but”: all these exquisite flowers hardly produce seeds or germinate very poorly, which means that propagation with personally collected seeds will not work in this case.
As a rule, the plant is propagated by cuttings. Let's consider the basic rules for the reproduction of surfinia.
Preservation of queen cells for cuttings
- In flowerpots and containers, ampelous petunias are good on their own.
- Weather resistance;
- - are allocated to a separate group of petunias due to the long hanging shoots on which a garland of flowers is formed. Most often they are cultivated in hanging baskets, balcony boxes and tall vases.
Choose opaque dishes;
Winter cuttings
Petunia takes root very easily, the main thing is to maintain a sufficient level of moisture.
Since if there is an excess of it, rotting will begin, and if there is a deficiency, the plant will not grow. The obvious
The same soil is not used again for propagating petunia by cuttings.
If you keep the mother plants in a room where the temperature is quite high, you need to provide the petunias with additional lighting for 12 hours every day. The lower the temperature in the room in which the queen cells are stored, the less light they need. The air in the room should not be too dry and the soil too wet - water the petunias when their leaves begin to droop. Fertilize plants rarely, using only potassium and phosphorus fertilizers. Don’t be alarmed by the fact that petunia looks rather dull in winter; by spring it will begin to grow.
Optimal time and conditions for cuttings
How to propagate petunia of your favorite variety if you don’t want to buy seeds or ready-made seedlings every year? Some hybrids of petunias (for example, surfinia, calibrachoa), double, large-flowered, ampelous varieties are most often propagated
It is better to start cuttings from August to September, then by winter you will have young plants.
The most decorative plants with the largest and most densely double flowers are selected from double petunias for queen cells.

- If the water has evaporated, there is no need to change it, just add a little;
- A bright, cool room with a temperature of about 16 degrees is an ideal place for wintering petunias. The lower the temperature, the less lighting the plants require. Watering at this time should be moderate. From about November, it is advisable to supplement the light with a lamp. In early January, after applying nitrogen-containing fertilizers, the lighting should be increased to 16 hours a day.
- In cases where very few plants of a rare species have grown from seeds, they can be propagated by cuttings.

Diseases and pests
Surfinia is a hardy plant, but if it is not properly cared for, it can develop diseases of fungal etiology, represented by spotting, gray and black rot , which develop when the soil is waterlogged. Also, similar diseases can occur when the soil is highly acidic and there is no drainage in the soil or pot.
Replanting the plant with preliminary pruning of rotten roots and treating them with antifungal drugs such as Fitosporin will help to cope with this problem.
Among the insects, the plant is threatened by spider mites, whiteflies and thrips , feeding on the sap of stems and leaf blades. If pests are detected, the crop should be treated with Actellik by spraying the leaf blades with it, diluting the insecticide according to the instructions on the package.
With proper care of surfinia and prevention of diseases, it will grow and delight the grower for a long time without causing any troubles.
Surfinia ampelous
This plant belongs to one of the variety groups of ampelous petunia. Growing surfinia is not fundamentally different and is quite within the capabilities of a novice gardener. With good care, the plant will delight you with a huge ball of flowers, which can be used to decorate a flower bed, garden plot, or make a hanging flower bed on the balcony.
Surfinia ampelous: care
High-quality care and proper planting of surfinia will allow you to easily form a beautiful hanging bush. The plant must be planted in large pots, as the bush becomes quite bulky. The substrate should be of medium structure with an acidity pH of -5.5-6.5. Prefers loamy or sandy soils, but is quite adaptable to any other sufficiently fertile soil. Adult ampelous surfinia needs good feeding. Keep the soil moist at all times. It is better to place a hanging pot in places well protected from direct rays of the sun and wind.
When growing, gardeners often wonder whether it is necessary to pinch out surfinia, because the plant is intended for a hanging pot and has long shoots. In fact, it is necessary to pinch the plant when the shoots reach 15-20 cm. Then the bush will be more lush and form faster. Remember that after pinching, flowering will stop for 2-3 weeks, this is normal. As a rule, when caring for ampelous surfinia, shoots are renewed in this way in the initial stage of growth and at the end of summer to rejuvenate the adult plant.
One of the secrets to forming a bush that is lush and completely covered with flowers is to cut off all the buds until the shoots grow to the required length and the bush is thus formed.
Surfinia: reproduction
As a rule, the plant is propagated by cuttings. Let's consider the basic rules for the reproduction of surfinia.
- It is better to start cuttings from August to September, then by winter you will have young plants.
- Always use additional lighting when growing seedlings. Daylight hours should last at least 16 hours.
- For cuttings of surfinia, it is convenient to use small plastic cups with a volume of 1.5 liters. It is not necessary to make holes for water drainage. There you need to pour a soil mixture consisting of sand, peat and garden soil in equal parts. The ground should be frozen first. If you use containers, then when planting, you need to place the cuttings quite tightly to each other, approximately every 2-3cm.
- To propagate surfinium, select an apical stalk about 8 cm long, which has at least 5 leaves. A couple of lower leaves are removed and the cuttings are dipped in root powder. After treatment, the cuttings are buried 2/3 into the soil.
- Seedlings should be watered moderately and sprayed periodically. The air temperature should be between 23-26°C.
- It is very important for good rooting to place the cut tops in the ground as early as possible. After just a couple of hours, their ability to take root is significantly reduced. Also, one of the secrets of growing seedlings is bottom heating. If you place cups or trays vertically, the light above the bottom shelf will serve as a heater for the top shelf.
- After the seedlings are ready, it is necessary to plant the surfinia in separate pots. Their volume should be about 100 ml. The readiness of seedlings is determined by the size of the roots - their length must be at least 2 cm.
- If buds begin to appear, they must be cut off. Also, to achieve a lush bush, you need to pinch shoots above the 5th leaf.
Surfinia diseases
In most cases, the onset of the disease is associated with improper care of Surfinia ampelae. If you water the plant too much, it can cause wet rot. If you notice darkening on adult plants, they must be removed and the flower garden treated with special preparations.
Stems are often affected by late blight. At the same time, a brown spot appears on them, and over time the plant withers and dies. For prevention, treat the plant with copper-containing preparations. This treatment will also prevent brown spotting.

Problems when growing surfinia
Sometimes flower growers involved in growing this ornamental crop have to face the following problems:
- Stickiness of leaf plates - stickiness on the leaves appears as a result of the plant being damaged by spider mites. The pest can be eliminated by spraying surfinia with Actellik.
- White coating on leaves – the appearance of white coating on leaves is a sign of powdery mildew infection. Spraying the plant with mustard infusion, which is prepared in the proportions of 2 tbsp, will help eliminate the disease. spoons per 10 liters of water.
- Wilting of the lower leaf blades - the lower leaves wilt when the soil is waterlogged. After establishing the watering regime, this problem will disappear by itself.
- Yellowing of leaf blades - leaves can turn yellow with excess moisture and sun. By eliminating the influence of these negative factors, the grower will be able to restore health to the crop.
- Wilting of a crop - if a crop begins to wither for no reason, then most likely nematodes have appeared in the soil, which have severely damaged the root system. Usually in this case the plant cannot be saved because it is too damaged. To destroy these parasites on the site. You need to dig it up and pour boiling water with garlic into the ground. The spill should be repeated after a few days. Planting at this place can only be done next year.
- Lack of flowering - the absence of flowers on a plant can occur as a result of: low soil fertility, lack of heat and light. By eliminating these mistakes in care, the gardener will be able to admire the abundant flowering of this ornamental crop.
By providing the plant with all the necessary conditions for its growth, development and flowering, no problems will arise with its cultivation.
Surfinia and petunia: features and differences between varieties
Even experienced gardeners cannot always distinguish petunia from surfinia. This is due to the fact that they have a huge number of similar features. In our country, petunia is often called surfinia, although the latter is just a subspecies of the first flower. Both types are perfect for decorating a personal plot. They are easy to care for and do not require special conditions. Plants have unique decorative properties, and it is for this reason that they are so widespread.
Petunia is a perennial ornamental flower. The plant blooms almost the entire summer season and is easy to care for. Petunia is presented in classic and hybrid versions. Hybrid petunias include the following species:
Flowers love bright areas and warmth. If the weather does not favor abundant sunshine, then the plant stops blooming, waiting until the moment when the light becomes maximum. If the weather is too dry, the crop requires periodic watering. Flowers do not like wind and rain; water droplets damage the leaves, negatively affecting the appearance of the plant.
Petunias are planted very densely. Reproduction occurs by seeds and cuttings. Flowers tolerate replanting well and take root well in open and closed ground, which makes it possible to create potted compositions from them.
Surfinia is a garden miracle grown by breeders from Japan. The ancestor of the variety is ampelous petunia. A distinctive feature of the plant is its ultra-fast growing season. The bushes have a huge number of branches, and the length of the stems can reach 3 meters.
Reproduction occurs vegetatively, since surfinia practically does not produce seeds. Like petunia, the plant loves light and warmth. Flowers will have to be watered regularly, but moisture should not be allowed to stagnate in the growing area. Despite the fact that this variety is just a hybrid of petunia, breeders have developed many subspecies of the plant.
Classic types include:
- Red. The buds have the shape of a basket in the form of a blooming ball. Behind the abundance of flowers, the greenery of the plant itself is barely noticeable; the bush is very compact. The flowers are bright red.
- Blue. The flowers are blue, the buds are large, and the stems are long, which gives the feeling of the presence of a real flower waterfall. Ideal for vertical compositions.
- Blue Vein. The color of the petals is deep blue, the veins and throat are inky. The aroma intensifies during sunset.
- Burgundy. The buds are a rich wine color; there are always a huge number of them on the bush.
- Hot Pink. The color of the flowers is pink, with bright crimson veins.
The Table series includes the following types:
This series has less amplitude compared to the classic subspecies. The buds are smaller in diameter, and the bushes form densely. Most of the flowers in this series have an unusual shape and often resemble bells.
Surfinia series Double:
The size of the buds of these species is slightly smaller than that of the classic series, but they have a velvety surface, which gives them a special decorative effect when creating landscape design
The latest development of Japanese flower growers is Surfinia Green Edge Pink. The main feature of the variety is its color. The buds are pink, and the edging of the leaves is green.
What is the difference between surfinia and petunia?
Surfinia is one of nine subspecies of the petunia family. In simple terms, she is a hybrid of it. This nuance can only be distinguished by experienced gardeners, but beginners constantly confuse these two plants.
Compared to petunia, surfinia is more resistant to diseases and pests, it is resistant to negative weather conditions, although it needs to be covered from rain, it has a wider variety of varieties and shades of inflorescences, it blooms longer and more abundantly, and is also characterized by an accelerated growing season.
It should be noted that young surfinia turns into a full-fledged plant, which pleases with its abundant flowering, in just a couple of months.
What does Surfinia look like?
Despite its low maintenance requirements, surfinia looks very noticeable - it has fairly large flowers, simple or double. Their diameter can reach up to 9 cm, and the color palette includes many different shades. Often such flowers have pronounced contrasting veins on the petals. Like petunias, the stems and foliage of surfinia are light green in color and pubescent.
Surfinia is considered an ampelous plant. In favorable conditions, it produces whips up to 2 m long in less than a couple of months. Shoots on a bush can be formed from each internode, which allows you to give it any necessary shape - cushion-shaped, spherical, etc. The long lashes left can form a spectacular cascade.
The large green mass and developed root system of the flower require sufficient nutrients, so growing one surfinia will require about 6-8 cubic meters of soil. Owners of small containers can choose more compact ampelous petunia hybrids.
Caring for Surfinia petunia seedlings
When the first shoots appear, the container is moved to the windowsill closer to the sun. During this period, active growth of Surfinia seedlings begins.
Sprouts with at least three leaves must be picked. Surfinia is planted in separate cups or pots. It is possible to use a large container in which young seedlings are placed so that they do not interfere with each other’s development. In general, ampelous petunia Surfinya loves constancy, therefore, if possible, it is immediately planted in separate baskets or permanent containers.
After the seedlings have completely taken root, the room temperature can be lowered to 18 degrees Celsius. During this period, the plant needs a lot of light for the crown to form correctly, as well as frequent feeding with fertilizers at half the dosage.
To form a decorative and beautiful bush, it is necessary to pinch the seedlings. The first time this is done is when the plant has reached 10 cm in height. The second and subsequent ones - every 15 cm.
If the first signs of diseases have been identified on the seedlings (black leg, late blight, septoria), weak solutions of phytosporin or potassium permanganate can be used to combat the disease.
Growing this beautiful flower at home is not so difficult. You just need to follow all the recommendations and advice of experienced summer residents. The popularity of this variety of petunia is growing rapidly. Many summer residents who grow Surfinia in Ukraine, Belarus, and Russia advise decorating their home yard and home with this flower.

Growing petunia Surfinia
How to grow petunia Surfinia (see photo) at home? Until recently, it was impossible to buy seeds of this hybrid variety, since their manufacturer, the breeding company Suntory, kept the technology strictly secret. It seemed possible to propagate flowers only vegetatively. Now Surfinia seeds are offered for free sale. It is possible that the company decided to reveal the secret of its creation due to the fact that all ampelous petunias began to be called Surfinia. This trend has misled even experienced gardeners. One could often hear the question about surfhinni and petunia, what is the difference between them?
Mineral complex feeds (superphosphate) are used as fertilizers. It is recommended to carry out such fertilizing 2 times a month (every 14 days). Organic fertilizer is applied once every 10 days in the form of a solution of chicken manure.
